This is scary. User installs Win 8/8.1, uses MS ID because OS tells him to, gets toolbar malware infection, not only is the infection in the registry, it now gets persisted in "the cloud" because it's considered a user preference, and thus survives otherwise clean fresh OS installs.

I agree. The USER should have known better than to install a networked copy of anything from Microsoft. It's far safer to run those systems in a sandbox without Internet connectivity.
