You could probably say we are upper-middle compared to the rest of the country's average. But around here - middle class really. Too goddamn many overnight millionaires from successful startups (while it lasted).

I'm solid middle but I find I have better relationships with people who identify themselves as lower to lower middle-class. I can't stand people who are constantly trying to one-up each other. Plus they seem to be more grounded to earth about their finances.

A lot of people in the middle like to live like they are in the upper-middle -> top for some asinine reason.

I'd put it at around $15,000, but I can buy those numbers. As a unofficial guide, I'd say if you have to put off eating sometimes, or have stress about where you're getting food, shelter, or clothes, you're poor. If you have the basics covered, even if they aren't first choice(store brands, WalMart, no mansions :^P), you're lower middle class.

Well considering that 62% of those living in poverty have cable or satellite TV, I must be ultra-poor with my OTA TV.

I'd define upper class to be if you and your children would be able to not work another day in your life and get by. If you can lose your job and be fine financially even if you don't find another job for an extended period of time (i.e. a year+), you'd be upper-middle. If you lose your job and you can't make your mortgage payments or rent in the next one or two months, you're lower class.

I wonder what's the percentage of upper middle class without cable or satellite TV. Because my uncle makes 80K+ and throughout all my oldest cousin's 28 years they have not had more than your basic, local television.

note: if you get excited over 10 cent buffalo wings and dollar PBRs you're not upper class. Me = not upper class

How come no one is defining lower-lower class, middle-lower class, and upper-lower class? :p

I'm middle class, I'd be much better off if i didn't buy a house in 2006, but I'm doing okay. I can manage for 6 months without a problem if I lost my job, but regular monthly spending is pretty tight, it's give or take month to month with money saved from tax return, bonus, etc. for the majority.

Parents divorced, dad is doing fairly well, mom is middle class. I have a lot of uncles who are upper class though. Notably an uncle who travels around the world on a regular basis (business man) and another uncle who's known by his name in Dubai (Executive VP/COO of Rotana hotels) -- who is filthy rich I'm sure. Of course, nothing trickles down. ;)

Middle class to the end baby, and screwed by the government the whole way!

The Frugal/cheap mindset transcends class. If anything, I bet there's even more people in the middle/upper class that are frugal than in the dead middle/lower middle classes. My household income puts us in the top 5%. If I go out to eat it's usually with a B1G1 entree coupon in hand and if there's a drink special with a $2 mug of PBR I'll go for that over the $5 pint of a more expensive beer.

My grandfather was cheap. My Dad was cheap. I'm cheap. I hope my kids learn the same lessons.

My mom immigrated here 11 years ago, she got a college degree, found medical job and now lives in middle class suburbs. I'm still a poor college student with cable internet and my cheap but decent comp. I keep my priorities straight, better have a computer than eat good food :p

Vanishing middle class, checking in. I always think of upper class as 'people who never have to work again'.

That's how I would define upper class. They work because they get some sort of satisfaction out of it, but if they stopped working today and never started working again, they would be set very well off for the rest of their lives. I'm solidly middle-class and if my wife goes back to working once the kids are in school, we'll be solidly upper-middle. In my mind upper-middle would be that one of us can lose our job and not really be affected by it. Middle class to me means that 6 months without work puts a huge hurt on you :).
