Hey

I've been using my CTX PR960F for 5 years now, and I am thinking of replacing it to 17" or 19" LCD

Now I thought about getting some 8MS LCD, till I saw that samsung & viewsonic have new 4ms lcds.

so since viewsonic are quite expesnive here (don't have any formal importer)

my choice lies between the Samsung SM 730BF and the 930BF

Right now I'm using my 19" (18.1 viewable) with 1184x768@100Hz,
That's why I fear that a 17" would be too small. (since you should run lcds with native res = 1280x1024)

What do you think?

4ms seek time is really more of a gimmick than reality. Even 8ms seek doesn't reflect reality. 19" is definitely better than 17" but a 17" wouldn't look too small with 1280x1024 as when I had my 17" some years back I ran it at 1280x960 and it wasn't really small at all. Really 19" should run at 1600x1200 IMO since 20" LCD do and they aren't that much bigger than a 19" but someone decided that all we needed for a 19" LCD was 1280x1024. That being said, I would suggest a 20". ;)

I have a 4ms and it is overkill but I wanted that insurance I wouldnt be dissapointed with motion blur or other fast action gaming. 8ms seems to be the cutoff point. While I can notice a difference with 4ms over 8ms I cant put my finger on what exactly is different enough to not buy an 8ms. I wouldnt get 12ms that I can see. I am very sensitive to motion and 8ms will be perfectly fine.

Yes go with 19" over the 17". Like you stated your last one lasted you 5 years. Monitors will go from PC upgrade to PC upgrade so get the biggest and best you can because it will last you several years unlike video/cpu/drives etc which seem to get replaced every year.

That's only if the monitors actually are 4ms or 8ms. Many monitors advertise as such but really they are rarely referring to average seek times but rather the best case scenarios. I think Firingsquad did a study on this with high-end 19" LCDs and showed that high-end LCDs with "8ms" seek time doesn't necessarily perform that way in all situations . . .

I know they fixed a few issues such as backlight bleeding when going from the 930B to the 930BF.

so that's why I'm not getting a 930B.

bad thing is that we currently have the 730BF here, but we have no idea when is the 930BF is gonna ship.

:(

wow, how far away from the monitor do you sit?

at that refresh rate your text might be a bit fuzzy. the text on an LCD is much clearer, as long as you're running at native res on a dvi connection. if you have normal vision and are sitting about arm's length from the LCD you should be able to see it just fine.
