If they just designed the connectors with proper load balancing, they would never need to.

I know thats just a joke but if the card could run a desktop just on power from the pcie slot and used the mains when it ran 3D clocks I'd be up for that!
Would make the inside of the case a lot cleaner as well.
Unfortunately you'd need a power brick to do that or some very beefy power circuitry on the card!

Igor posted a video a few days ago where a company was designing purpose-built rack-mount computers where the power supply is a stand alone box in the rack, and it provides thick copper rail DC power to any devices that slide into the rack.

Let's connect the GPU directly onto this external DC rail.

How long??? It's long overdue! Especially Jensen needs to put on his big boy pants and admit that his crappy power hogging GPUs cannot run with normal PSUs anymore. He needs to make his GPUs external so most people can return to mATX and mini-ATX cases.
