Why are RAMs still so expensive. I remember back in 2011 I build a system and got CORSAIR XMS3 16GB (4 x 4GB) for ~ $80, right now its sells for twice that price. Somewhere down the line it became expensive and stayed there. With the falling prices of all the other components, you would expect the prices of RAM to go down too... Did I miss the news about some tsunami hitting the RAM factories?

I don't think the normal desktop RAM is expensive, especially when comparing to the sever RAM.

Also, the technology in SSD / Flash memory is completely different than RAM.

No matter how cheap the Apple is, Orange's price won't drop.

Well, its not just apples, over time, peaches, plums, avocados, strawberries, bananas, prices of everything sort of drops, you can get bigger and bigger for the same price, essentially dropping the price of lb/$. But this this case orange prices kept going up.
For a while the prices of bananas went up too when Tsunami hit the coast of the Asian countries where they grew, but after a couple of years the prices went down and now they are at pre 2011 levels.

I was wondering, there must be a reason for the increase in the price of Oranges.

a few years ago IIRC, the biggest drop in ram prices was due to a massive over supply when windows 8 was released. The manufactures where expecting a large demand to go with the OS, but it did not occur as expected.

I ended up with some 32GB of mid ranged RAM for about $250 AUD IIRC.

Something similar currently is $375 AUD looking at the local shop I purchased from.

So no floods, just over manufacture was the cause.

Same here, 4x8G RAM for about $220 AUD.

But I am in Hong Kong, may be a different market, the RAM is really cheap here. (The lowest price I've seen for 4x8G here is $140 AUD [$130 USD])
