Looking to replace my 3 year old card, as its starting to choke a bit on high res Civ 5 action at times (bad enough that Windows offers to engage video "baby mode" for me- no thanks Windows 7, I want all the colors).

Play lots of FPS, like the eye candy and have owned both NVidia and AMD cards. A stock Overclocked card is fine, but I tend not to do much (if any) OCing. A quieter card is better, and I don't do SLI. Currently 1080p gaming for the most part. Would like a card that can hold up for 2 years. Can spend $300-400. Prefer Amazon as I have $100 in Amazon fun bucks to spend. Rig specs in signature.

Supposedly there are 770 and 760Ti launches coming up as well. If nothing else, it should force a minor AMD price drop at the high end. May want to wait a couple more weeks.

I play a modest amount of Civ V myself. I used to use a 7950 on a 1920x1200 resolution monitor (3570 cpu, OC'd to 4.3Ghz, 16 GB RAM, 2x Samsung 256GB SSD's in RAID 0) and even then Civ V would tend to chug towards the end game. That's one reason I bought a Titan. No interest in doing SLI/XFire, so Titan was the only single gpu solution for my situation.

For yours, just a 7950 will still chug a bit near the end game, provided your maps are packed with warring factions.

For ~300 a 7950 is still a good deal. The 780 itself changed nothing as far as performance per dollar goes. Its a card that fits between a 680 (Soon to be renamed 770) and the Titan for both cost and performance.

A 670 will perform a bit better than a 7950 in Civ V, as that game typically leans towards nVidia. But a 670 will cost more as well.

if you want something quieter you can spend a little extra for a non-reference cooler design. 7950 and 7970 do make some noise, but not too bad. most manufacturers offer alternative cooling solutions on their cards.

7970's they can be had for $30 -$50 more with rebate and sales. Buy two and call it a day. Yes the drivers with AMD have issues but that should soon be resolved. I currently game with Radeon Pro locking my fps to 40 and everything runs smooth as gravy.

Thanks- this was the key! I waited for the hard release today, and the 770 is exactly what I was looking for. After reading the reviews here and a few other sites, I found a good one in stock at Amazon:

Gigabyte GTX 770 GDDR5-2GB 2xDVI/HDMI/DP OC WINDFORCE 3X Graphics Card GV-N770OC-2GD

Used my credit (and some Amex points) to get it on the cheap. Should have it tomorrow.

eVGA.com has several models in stock. No price premium on any of them. Going to sell my GTX 680 to a buddy that desperately needs a video card right now and replace the card in my HTPC with this bad boy!

Was able to use $104 in eVGA bucks left over from my Folding@Home contributions over the last year too! Would have had a bit more, but I spent some on a Titan backplate recently ;).

Nice! I had to go with Amazon so I could use my $100 gift card. And they let you use Amex points as well- so $143 bucks delivered overnight!
