The USAF is planning on having laser weapons on jets by 2020

The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, or AFRL, said it's on track to demonstrate a working laser weapon on a fighter jet by 2020.

"We see the technology evolving and maturing to the stage where it really can be used."

Ultimately this tech will trickle down into the population, which means we are only decades away from

Good use of camera motion to add excitement to mundane action. There is also a flare added to the hilt of Vader's saber as he brings it back. There seems to be no reason for it other than to dazzle the audience.

Lightsavers aren't lasers either.

And I've also noted that it seems as if dance choreographers or ballet instructors have taken over directing Hollywood fight scenes, when real street fighters should be in their place.

On topic, so I'm guessing the problem with limiting the distance a powerful laser projects its beam has been resolved?

Or clouds?

I didn't see them address clouds specifically, but hopefully they put them into their calculations.

More info from the article
The test beds for these kinds of weapons likely could be pod units installed aboard so-called fourth generation fighter jets, Hammett said. The commander of Air Force Combat Command, Gen. Herbert "Hawk" Carlisle, revealed last May that a test is in the works involving an F-15 Eagle. "I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll see a prototype test case in the next year or two," Carlisle told Air Combat Command.

A mix of laser and conventional weapons could result in "a totally transformed battle space in 20 to 25 years," he said.

Very simply, here's how laser weapons work: They focus extremely concentrated beams of light on their targets, heating them to such high temperatures that they burn or ignite, disabling or destroying the target. Hammett said fighter jet weapons would use a type of laser called solid state -- which creates laser beams by pumping energy into a solid crystalline material.

When researchers and military brass describe these weapons, the operative word is "defensive."

In other words, don't expect to see fighter jets strafing troops with deadly beams of light.

Here's how Air Force special ops might use them: The commander of USAF special ops, Lt. Gen. Bradley Heithold, said last September that by 2020 he wants them on C-130J Ghostrider gunships for landing zone protection.

The laser weapons would take out possible threats like enemy vehicles, or disable infrastructure such as cell towers.

When you're shooting a laser, electric power equals ammunition. As long as the plane has fuel to power itself, its laser weapons essentially would be "loaded."

As Hammett put it: "You could have an unlimited magazine ... loitering aircraft that could address and access a wide variety of targets. Incredible precision strike capabilities could be enabled there."

and I was just being glib with the lightsaber gif. eeesh.

But light sabers, man. :p

Anyway, I see the advent of laser weapons as the demise of non-stealth air power. If the enemy can see an aircraft, it's dead. Sneaking skills are going to become very important.

Appears they have finally gotten to shrinking and refining the ABL down.

Was a matter of time I guess.

I wonder why they are testing it out on a F-15 instead of say, a F-35 ?

Teasing a bit. kinda.

I guess because the F-15 flies.

Was this a regular F-15? Would think they would probably want to avoid removing one of the F-15Es from regular operations when they have lots of older aircraft available.

Doubt it. Laserbeams tend to have range problems due to the way atmospheres interact with laserbeams. If anything this might be more dangerous to stealth fighters because it would not require a lock on like missiles usually do.

My thoughts exactly, I can't believe the idiot actually thought that was Darth Vader. The most iconic villain in American movie history and he blows it. How pathetic is that?

I'd imagine the US has more than enough F-15s just hanging out to spare one for that purpose.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are even testing it out on a F-15SE.

Movie would be better with Knievel jumping his motorcycle through that window, from the outside, while swinging a light saber.

The application quoted may very well lessen the risk of cloud interference. Though fog would still ah heck things up; also the potential for heavy dust in a desert scenario. Be interesting to see how this works.
