With all this drama on the R520, Let's have a little fun

*DISCLAIMER*: 1) This is meant to be a much-needed comic relief thread to the whole ongoing drama of the R520 benchmarks at hardwareanalysis. Nothing said in here should be taken seriously, or as fact. 2) I realize that 3dmark is not exactly the best method to measure a card's performance, but it does allow for the least number of duplicate scores, as well as a good play on numbers.

This is a continuation of the little game posted on the R520 benchies thread at Beyond3d forums before it got locked: http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23662&page=1&pp=25

On a more positive note...

...any 'betting folk' among you want to hazard a guess on real benchmarks ?

Specifically, if you take a 'fewest bottlenecks' system with an FX-57, 2GB memory etc and an R520XT - what kind of 3DMark05 score are you expecting at default settings ?

If memory serves, these are the approximate scores for the most recent high-end cards:-

6800 Ultra: 5800
X850XT PE: 6300
7800 GTX: 7700

R520XT: ?

I'm going to guess that it gets 8888. I'll have to to afford one 😉

Oh, and absolutely no flaming in here--or else i'll hit you with a big wooden hammer 😛

whoever gets closest to the ATi release figures gets a big cookie :cookie:

I say 8000 if the card comes in at 700/1400...possibly your number if they come out with a 800/1400 card...I also suspect nvidia will release driver to pu that GTX in the 8000's as well...no comment on whether they will be true performance or slight tricks...

Tbh I don't care about benchmarks. Just how well it can handle large resolutions and display top notch AA/AF at acceptable frame rates.

I'll bite and say 720/1400.

3dmock is a lot more dependent on vertex processing power than any modern game. So, if the x1800 has 8 vertex shaders like the 7800gtx, the 600 mhz clock speed should give it a big advantage. I'll guess that a 600 mhz 8vs/16ps r520 would get somewhere around 8000-8500 3dmarks. But, when it comes to real games, it might only be as good or slightly behind the 7800gtx, because modern games put the a lot of stress on the pixel shaders, and the 7800gtx has a higher theoretical peak performance in that department. Of course, it's actual performance may be comletely different based on a number of factors, but on paper the gtx seems to have a slight lead.

Also, to add some fuel to the fire, digit-life did a new article on the r520 as well.

another good read....

<<X1800 series: XT will most likely be a card for the press, at least for the first several months. Enthusiasts will get the XL card (if all goes well). The PRO modification will be the main card, as always. Partially defective chips with one locked quad will be used in the LE modification, more or less available to a normal user, not a gamer. By the way, top solutions are subject to overheating and take up two slots (due to their cooling system).>>

What I and many have said in other threads...ofcourse we got blasted as well...

I think it sums up that if sanders tested at 600 it is no surpirse it fell just shy of the GTX based on his calculations of 600*16....If the card comes out at 650 it should just edge the gTX.....700 should walk away with the title, albeit likely short lived and in specific apps

whats the use of having 700Mhz when it costs about $1k+ and is sparcely available?!!!

The fanboy inside me will say that the R520 will get 30,000 3dmark05's, but reality will probably put that figure closer to 5,000.

Isnt the memory they use (from samsung) rated at 1600mhz? So couldnt you theoretically push the memory all the way to 800? Anyways, depending on how how the R520 gets, we will see vendors probably pushing 650-700/750-800 core and memory respectively.

I think the best they could do in 3Dmark 05 is 9500 with 700/800.

I stick to my prediction that the r520 will be slower than the 7800gtx on the majority of benchies. There will be extra features - so could be interesting. Also yields are said to be good, especially in mid and upper mid - so lets have the price war. Have you seen the pictures on Hexus? The card looks absolutely huge, which is not a good sign.

I was just poking fun at the brand fans. I just dont understand why folks take it as a personal attack if you dont like the brand/type of hardware they use.

i know; i was just poking fun at eating babies 😉
