I wonder, how did some of you let yourselves get so out of shape? Time and time again I read where this guy or that guy says they lost 80 lbs on Atkins or with another diet. My question is, how did you let yourself get so fat? Where you injured, depressed or just had no self control? I can understand 20, 30 or even 40 lbs overweight but anything over is just ridiculous (unless there was a medical reason) Don't you have access to a mirror? Couldn't you just say "No, 3 servings is enough?"

I feel sorry for Obese People because they obviously don't care how bad they look or just can't help themselves. However, no matter how good food tastes it can't replace the feeling of being healthy and not looking ridiculous when you dress and go out in public.

I think it's a cycle of "well, I'm fat/out of shape enough at this point that it will take a crapload of work to get back where I used to be". They get all serious for a few weeks, get frustrated, and then go eat a bunch of crap and gain even more weight. Eventually they get heavy enough that they stop trying and/or the extra weight is a huge impediment to exercise. Going for a jog with 100 extra pounds is a big difference from going out with 15 extra on your waist. I know from personal experience that sticking with a given program can be really challenging.

Just my 0.02

Edit- I think it's a social/family thing too. If mom and dad are marathoners, the kids are probably going to be active too because that's "normal" for them. The opposite is true, of course.

I got about 30lbs extra that I'm losing -- about 15 of it has just been there for years (probably from when I lived in dorms), and the other 15 had accumulated over the past year since I started working at the family business. 8 hours a day of sitting at a desk. Ugh.

After my size 36's started to get tight, I said "fvck this" to buying bigger pants and went on the South Beach diet and started working out 3-4 times a week.

About 2 months later I'm halfway to my goal of 180 ("optimal" weight according to some charts is 155-170 -- F*** that). Not only do I eat almost anything I want (in moderation, duh), I look great naked now (lost my bitch tits and love handles), I have a lot more energy, less back problems, and actually have visible muscles for the first time I can remember. Oh yeah, I'm down to a size 34 now. :)

I bet a lot of those who are that much overweight probably were fat kids and their eating habits learned as children probably is the reason for their situation now.

According to the government, I'm supposed to be 172 pounds. I'm 222 pounds. That's 50 pounds, but I don't think I look 50 pounds over weight. I eat maybe 1800 calories per day. I've always eaten at most 2 meals per day.

I don't know what it is. I just have a really slow metabolism, I guess.

A lot of people blow up when they start their "adult" life too. 50 hours per week at a job + family + other stuff = no time to work out and a propensity to just grab "whatever" to eat because you don't have time to prep good stuff.

Their chart is skewed somehow.
I know for sure they don't count for large-build people like me.

In high school I was at the "optimal weight" of 158. I had people constantly ask if I was sick because of how sunken my cheeks were.

But if you are over 100 lbs overweight large muscular builds really aren't a factor

when all the little pimple farmers have ever done is sit in their rooms in front of their pcs eating junk food and crap, what do you expect? hell i bet alot of these guys are so pale from never having been in the sun you could probably see through them. alot of them have never played sports or have done anything remotely active, except for spanking their monkeys to internet porn. so then they wake up one day and say wow that girl from school looked at me. she wants me. i better go on some retarded fad diet so i can become a stud.

i have to agree with you that unless there is a medical reason for becoming a fatass, there is no excuse and definately no sympathy from me for someone being a freaking land whale. so if your fatass gets stuck in the shltter door at the country buffett you better watch out for me and my plastic fork!

I think for a lot of people it is gradual. As you get older and your metabolism slows down people continue to eat like they were a 16 year old boy yet. You gain 10-15 pounds in one year...you tell yourself it's not so bad it's just 10-15. Then you take that over 5 years and::: "uhoh I'm 70 pounds overweight and everyone is laughing at me. I wheeze when I have to take one flight of stairs and in all seriousness and for safety purposes I should be wearing a bro (or a manziere (sp?) )"

Sounds like you have some serious issues yourself! All I know is that when I was injured and I gained 35 lbs of extra weight I was very depressed about it. I couldn't even imagine how I would have felt if I was 60, 80 or 100 lbs overweight. It must be really socially debilitating.

I really admire those like X-Man how have finally said enough and are taking the bull by the horns, even if it's something like Atkins. Hey if it works for him and improves his life and more importantly his health then more power to him!

Yeah I'd go with that.

People get slack, family, work etc is probably more of a priority for them then how they look. Or how unhealthy it is to have 80lbs of fat extra doing nothing. I guess this doesn't dramatically affect them in the short term but in the long term it probably will. But they are probably willing to take a few years of life away for some less hassle now.

People are too often in to instant gratification. They dont' understand you give yourself a good 4-6months of exercise in WHATEVER you decide will show some decent results. Nothing happens overnight.

I just hope I don't get any medical problems and stay in shape for as long as it is possible.

i have just gotten tired of the "fad" diets and "fat rights" that are everywhere these days.
the best diet is a well balanced diet combined with regular exercise. doing the atkins thing or any number of other diets out there isn't really that healthy for you. and the people that do them are usually looking for a get skinny quick solution and if they do loose the weight odds are that they are going to stop the fad diet and gain the weight back.
but i still have no sympathy for someone who has no medical reason/injury and lets themselves get huge out of simple laziness and poor diet.
eat some veggies and go for a walk....

I don't bust my ass for applause, I do it for myself. I don't need to post pics of myself to impress those whom I never will meet in person. All I can say is that no matter your age there is no reason to let yourself become a spooge. And if you find yourself overweight or grossly oveweight you can do something about it. Never give up, just be patient, it didn't take you six months to get in the shape you are in now, don't expect to get fit in six months. However, if it takes you a year or more to get healthy it will be because of a lifestyle change and the longer you stick with it the better chance it will become the norm for you!

Dude being grossly obese isn't healthy for you either. You might as well do the extreme diets if it means that in the long run you are goung to be Healthier. Maybe Atkins isn't the diet for those slightly overwieght but one thing it does teach is the life style change. I think that is the most important thing an obese person can learn!

I understand your motivation,I just felt that pics would certainly not be inappropriate as you seldom post any(unlike some folks) and you also backup your diet talk with action, not just critising others. You set a great example of fitness:)

I personally got to 360 pounds by the age of 16.

A combination of my mother?s depressive eating habits I picked up as a kid and a dangerous stomach infection which I got at 13 that eventually got me bed ridden by my sophomore year in high school is how I got there.

My dad left my mom with 2 kids, so we we're crazy poor until I was about 10. All I ever had to eat was outdated cereal or those kudos bars from a Church donation place. Living off that for a few years made me feel like Taco Bell or Burger King was good eats, holy lord did I feel better eating that than cereal or snack bars?

Eventually I found a doctor who knew what the hell was going on and from there I just started running three miles a night and eating meat all the time. I got down to 180 but that was way to thin, and now I hover around 200 to 210 depending on how much exercise I do each week. It was really hard work loosing all that weight though, and like everyone else I felt like a social outcast. Once you feel like a social outcast there's almost NO will to loose any weight, I think that's really what gets bigger people stuck.

I still like sh*tty food though which is a pain, as people who loose lots of weight tend to be sensitive to weight gain afterwards. Fortunately I?m only 19 and feel like I?m growing out of the junk food phase. It?s really pucked up to show anger towards overweight people though, you never know what may be causing the problem.

It takes alot of will to loose weight, it's not your place to be shooting people down for their faults. Food is no different than drugs for some.

If you aren't (or weren't) overweight, then you'll never understand. And there's nothing I can say to you that will help.

That's just the plain truth.

All that being said, I am one of those here who have lost a significant amount of weight (41 lbs) by doing the Atkins plan. It was probably the most difficult thing I've done in my life, as well as one of my proudest accomplishments. I will not gain it back because I have accepted the fact that I cannot go back to my old habits... And I've worked too damn hard (to lose the weight) to screw it up.

I still have another ~15lbs to go, but I'm having a somewhat difficult time in losing that... One reason, because the last pounds are always the most difficult. But mostly it's a motivation thing. I'm simply not unhappy being ~175lbs, like I was at ~216lbs. But I won't give up. ;)
