With $15/hr min in CA, #NoMoreTipping movement has solid footing?

don't understand why people still tip in cities where the servers are paid more than the fed minimum wage.

now that CA is the 1st state to require everyone in it to be paid at least double the fed minimum, how long will a majority of people there finally stop this tipping nonsense?

As soon as we get rid of the $3 minimum wage for waiters.

California treats its servers differently than most states in the Union: it is one of seven states that pays tipped employees the state minimum wage, $9 per hour, instead of the absurdly low federal minimum of $2.13 for tipped employees.

OP specifically mentioned California.

I love giving tips for great cheerful service. It takes a special kind of asshole who doesn't feel the need to reward awesome servers. That requires a monumental lack of empathy.

Damn, it's only $2.

Well, either way I don't see this social norm changing, unless the govt gets rid of of that provision on the federal minimum wage.

I would prefer they just got minimum wage, and the restaurant slightly increases the price of the food.

you do realize that while there is a minimum wage, waitstaff rarely makes that, and is reliant upon tips to offset the difference, right?

however if they no longer have to rely on tips to get a decent wage, yea, it's all good. I used to be a bartender and relied heavily on tips for my income as my hourly wage was a fucking joke (Chicago, IL too, not some podunk town in southern Oklahoma)

Doesn't matter if the minimum wage is $50/hr. People will continue to tip because it's a social norm such that people are embarrassed by not tipping. Not necessarily a rational perception, but it's how people feel and I don't see any way that changes.

There are many countries where tipping isn't allowed. I know in Japan, if you leave a tip on the table, it's considered offensive and the restaurant owner or wait staff will run out and chase you down to return the change.

do u tip the great smiling friendly Home Depot/Lowes employee who helped you locate the item you wanted?
or offered a suggestion that helped you out a lot.
no?

why not?
he makes the same minimum wage in CA as servers.

answer:
he's paid to do his job.
you support his paycheck by buying his employer's products

social norms evolve, usually for the better.
Been to places with WHITES ONLY signs lately?

I want everyone to be paid minimum wage or higher and tips go back to being reserved for EXCEPTIONAL service, not someone simply doing their job adequately, so there's an incentive to go above and beyond the normal call of duty in providing awesome customer service.

Actually tipping should be banned. Tip is a form of bribe.
At the same time make sure that the servers are paid like others.

Would you be fine with tipping removed but a 20% labor cost fee added automatically to your bill instead?

ie like labor cost when installing a part in your automobile

or maybe you shouldn't have worked in a such a shitty state for taxes (IL is 5th in the country)
The Prairie State ranks as the fifth worst state for taxpayers. The average burden for state and local taxes is $9,006. Only five states in the nation have an average tax bill over $9,000. Adding insult to injury, Illinois ranks poorly for return on tax dollars and tax help from accountants.

The real reason you were broke wasn't primarily because of your hourly wage, it was the money going to your state.

You got those numbers from 1994? Cause that's when I was bartending. And the real reason I was broke was because I was a raging, active alcoholic, but that's a different topic altogether.

I don't mind tipping but pretty obvious that restaurants are just going to pass any additional costs down to us. So this would not be out of the norm. Would people go out less when prices increase by 50%? Probably. I know if a restaurant raised my favorite meal from 10 bucks to 15 then I'm cooking at home, fuck it.

If you can pull more numbers out of your ass you might just be able to be trumps next PR person!

Fluff away fluffy flufferton!

Nah IL has always been a shithole tax-em-out-the-ass state, so just pointing it out. I doubt much has changed since the 90's man. We are talking about a state with its largest city that is now taxing fucking "cloud" services (yes the internet lol), that's how greedy they are. Hopefully you've moved since then unless you hate money. Those taxes can buy a lot more booze in say, Virginia.
Like shoppers getting a post-holiday credit card bill, tech companies are suffering sticker shock after finding out what the city's cloud tax will cost them.

Companies such as Amazon Web Services are warning their customers in Chicago that they'll be collecting the city's new 5.25 percent tax on their bills in the new year. For some companies, that could mean an annual tax in the six figures that will pinch profits or increase their burn rates, which could cause them to slow their rate of expansion.

Top states I'll never move to in this order:
1) NY
2) NJ
3) IL

California is a close 4th.

quit drinking in 95, it's amazing how much more money I had on hand once I did that. And I am so glad to know you aren't in the same state as me, nor have any desire to visit states I enjoy going to (not NJ tho, blech)
Yup, Chicago taxes the shit out of folks, and our new governor is a dumb-as-rocks motherfucker, but go figure, gop. You need to be D in IL and corrupt, that's how you get shit done.
