So I spent about 5 hours playing today and I guess I have to say this game is really quite good. I have some issues with some things not explained so well and I started on the easiest level and wish I could make it a bit more difficult but what really grabs me is the story. I actually had a very difficult time getting into the story with fallout and baulder gate. I never liked oblivion and I've put fallout 3 on hold (just left the vault) until I finish witcher. Fallout 3 (much like oblivion) just does not seem to be a cohesive story. It starts out good but as soon as you leave the vault it seems to become unglued. Witcher seems much more cohesive.

I few nit picks: potion brewing seems a bit iffy (at first I didn't quite understand that you collect the receipie -then just click the receipe to make the potion. I think you can brew random potions but it is not clear to me how to identify them.

Weapons seem a bit odd - you have 4 slots but i can't figure out why you would ever use (for example) the axe over the witcher sword you get at the start. Perhaps on harder levels weapons are more refined by enemy types.

Fire was also a bit tricky - i simply could not find a torch and had to settle for cat eye potion.

So I have a few nit picks about the mechanics (also I'm not sure if the extra combat styles are all that useful - i.e, ww or aa -though the effect look neat).

I really don't see why folks yip at pc gaming this is the third game in the last couple of months that I've played that is unique to the pc and has been very very enjoyable (the other two were kings quest and space ranger 2 - would love to find another game like space ranger 2 (not the rts part but the text quests and turn base space combat).

I haven't found much use for the extra weapons yet.
It did take a while before I found a torch, I had to use a Cat potion in the early bit as well.
The extra combat styles are definitely useful, but maybe less so in easy mode?

i'm a big RPG and Hack'n'Slash fan but i didnt really like the Witcher. the combat style wasnt very interesting (reminded me of console button mashing) and the skill tree had zero sophistication to it. i mean just fighting skills and no conversation skills or any interesting magic skills. so i gave up, gave my copy to a friend which i dont even think he installed the game after seeing it at my place.

The Witcher was one of my favorite RPG's that I have ever played, and I have played a lot. It isn't as open ended at Oblivion, but it does have a much better story and is much more realistic. I have to say that I was very impressed when I played it, because I didn't expect it to be that good.

You identify random potions by drinking them, and seeing what happens. If it's one with an actual effect, it will become identified.

Secondary weapons are useless, yes. But the torch you couldn't find goes in that slot - only time I've ever had any use for it, and really, you just end up using cat's eye potions. It exists because you cannot carry extra swords around otherwise - so if you're adventuring and find a great new sword, without that slot you'd have to leave your old one behind, preventing you from selling it later.

You will need all your combat styles. You could theoretically go with just the silver ones, I suppose, but on anything above normal people would pretty much obliterate you.

Maybe it's just me, but the ending was a let down. The boss battle was very easy, I took him down in maybe 30 seconds. Then you are treated to an uninspired dialouge with the lich, who offers no explanation what so ever on why the hell did you come back from the dead.

SPOILER

And of course there is the matter of De Aldesberg being Alvin, who somehow simultanously existed in two forms at the same point in time. Geralt could have at least expressed his disbelief, but instead he just alluded to it. The ending clip show also didn't satisfy me. I expected that the whole plot with Triss or Shani would actually lead to something, in my case Geralt settling down. Instead we're forced into another sequel.

Not that I didn't like the game. 'twas awesome.
