So, I've got the witcher 3 preloaded via gog.com

Now the question, will it run on the pentium G3258? Or did I waste my 15 euro's (until I upgrade)? I've not seen any PC review for this game, so of course there's not much to go on, basically this thread is pure speculation :)

Minimum requirements say 2500K / Phenom II x4 940, which is a little strange since they don't really compare http://anandtech.com/bench/product/80?vs=288
Fairly confident the pentium should be faster than that phenom II.

Some games have been problematic with 2 thread cpu's, some refusing to start, but later they were patched

Dragon age inquisition seemed the worst offender, however it does seem to run now, if youtube is to be believed.

Someone even tried it with a G630 pentium, says in the comments it didn't work on win7 but did work on win8.1

My specs:
windows 8.1
pentium G3258 on 4.6 GHz
2x4GB ddr3 1333 c7
gtx670

When the game launches I'll report back so we can compare the opinion on dual core gaming with reality.

Unless it needs a patch right away for the console bug of reserving core 0 and 1 for OS. Then I dont see any issue.

This game's fps limiter is weird, shows 100% cpu use all the time if you turn it on.

If I disengage it fps goes up and cpu load goes down.

Well, I guess with a titan X the pentium would be a problem, but with a 670 it isn't.

Cpu even went back to stock (non z overclocking being weird I guess) when I installed the new game ready driver, and it didn't affect fps.

So dualcore is still plenty

The game was 22.9GB with patches from steam.

Dualcore is below minimum specs and your gpu is just slightly above minimum specs.

I don't expect this to run anywhere near great...but feel free to post some fps results. Even on minimum I don't expect this to run great in 1080P or something like it. But if it starts as dual core...maybe it can run 30ish fps on low settings outside of towns.

My gpu has a hefty factory overclock, it's closer to the recommended 770 than the minimum 660.

I'll load up the nilfgaard camp and nuke the resolution, see what the cpu fps limit is.

All high, hbao+ on, hairworks off.

Still gpu limited at 1024x768, about 55 fps.

Shadows to low, 60 fps.

On native 1920x1200 I get 30-35 fps.

Yeah, my pentium does 60 fps on high, but the 670 can't do it at 1920x1200.

I'll run it with a 30 fps limiter, combat system in the witcher isn't that good anyway.

edit: and nuking settings doesn't do much, everything low/off on 1920x1200 is 45-50 fps.

Dualcore is below minimum specs and your gpu is just slightly above minimum specs.

I think their "minimum" is for high settings, because I tested it on my 5850 and the game was quite OK, still looked great IMO with settings appropriate for 30FPS, unless it becomes a lot worse later on...

I would expect a Pentium Dual Core to also work fine with this game if you use the 30FPS lock...

Actually the OC pentium does 60 fps high no problem, it's my gpu that's not up to the job.

Looks like this game offloads physx to gpu. Kind of explains why kepler does so poorly.

If I set it to cpu I get higher fps in some areas, but I'll be cpu limited in others, and have lower performance. So I'll keep it on gpu, seems more consistent.

If you have a cpu with lots of cores and a kepler gpu I'd recommend setting physx to cpu. In the nilfgaard camp in the first level I got over 10% higher fps with cpu physx.

Dunno, pentium is geting stomped in this game. Putting additional work on it seems like bad idea.

670 should be much faster with physx than pentium

Hmm. There's that darn AMD GPU driver overhead rearing it's ugly head again. Or is that the overhead of Physx being run on the CPU now, instead of on the GPU, as with NV cards, as you alluded to in PM.

Probably both.

Edit: can't seem to reproduce the 100% cpu 80% gpu scenario I had yesterday, maybe it was a bug/memory leak or something?

I guess it's the driver overhead then.
