My all time favorite RPG is Skyrim. But I want to try something different like Witcher 3. So I have some questions.

1. Does witcher 3 allow you to do side quests and forgo the main quest? And just go back to the main quest later?
2. Is the story open ended, so you can just really free roam?
3. Is it non-linear type game like Skyrim?
4. Is it bigger in terms of land than skyrim?

I want something where I can just roam around do quests and the main quest from time to time and just have fun and not have to worry about getting the main quest done asap. I can get the game on sale for $39 now.

Think yes to everything.

I actually enjoyed the side quests/Witcher contracts more than the main story. The quests do go by level though, and ~6 levels above your own the quest may be impossible without leveling up.

It's an amazing game. Just starting the 2nd expansion myself. Should play it on pc though, especially with your rig. There was a deal a few days ago for $30 for Witcher 1, 2 and 3.

It's MUCH MUCH better than Skyrim. I got bored of Skyrim fast. The side quests in Witcher 3 are awesome, you actually care about doing them. Also the voice acting is much better as well. Voice acting in Bethesda games always suck. Overall it's a much better RPG than Skyrim.

Yes to all of that with one caveat on the size. The map is broken into basically 3 regions meaning you cannot just walk from the "starting point" to the other end of all playable area. This isn't a huge deal because each region is very large and quite varied. But if you're wanting something like in skyrim where you start at 'x' and explore the whole map before doing anything, it won't work like that.

I use to like Skyrim, but then I took an arrow to the knee...

W3 is the superior in everything you asked but there is one huge distinction. W3 makes you play as a single, well defined character with a specific set of abilities. Skyrim let's you define your appearance, skills and some of your back story.
