You just have to give AMD some time!

It's not like games are announced yrs ahead of time, these new games just keep popping up out of nowhere!

It's not like AMD could have predicted years ago that HairWorks would be 64x tessellation factor with 8xMSAA or that NV would shove its proprietary HBAO+ that is an unoptimized performance penalty disaster into TW3 that couldn't be optimized for by AMD's driver. :sneaky:

Funny how the media tested TW3 with GameWorks (Hairworks and/or HBAO+) features ON and managed to show AMD cards in such negative light but when HBAO+ and Hairworks are turned off, we get:

290X > 970
290 > 780Ti / Titan
280X > 780

980 >= 780Ti SLI
780Ti is only 1 fps faster than 280X
280X > Titan

At least with GameWorks fully off, GCN performs well, but all Kepler products perform horribly given their pricing and performance standing at the time of release. Once CF is enabled, 280X could be on the heels of 780Ti SLI.

How does the 780 ti go from being ~12% faster to ~20% slower (relative to prior to Maxwell)? I've never seen anything like that before. I've seen AMD gain performance as time went on, but nothing like that.

Because Maxwell's guts are fundamentally different (compute driven) than Kepler's plus Maxwell has way better tess performance plus Maxwell's SMX/SMM (whatever is called now) is built for compute as opposed to Kepler. See the Witcher 3 thread in VC&G someone spelt it out. And on top of the arch, Nvidia doesn't care about Kepler anymore. Voila! Slower!

sorry, I wasn't clear. How did Hawaii's performance go from being ~12%slower to ~20% faster than Kepler compared to their performance prior to Maxwell. And considering the latest Tesla GPU released after Maxwell was Kepler I think the compute superiority of Maxwell is dubious.

TPU probably just noticed because it was time for their semiannual driver update.

980 certainly isn't better than a 780Ti by anything tangible.

Yet, 980 destroys 780Ti in TW3.

Also, it's a bit vague to say that Maxwell is way better at compute than Kepler. In Compute Mark tests, 980 isn't really that much faster than 780Ti, sometimes it's slower.

http://www.computerbase.de/2014-09/...-nvidia/9/#diagramm-gpu-computing-computemark

If we use Compute as a factor that explains why Kepler performs so poorly vs. GCN 1.0/1.1 in TW3 (without GameWorks) then how do we explain that 960 is just 6% slower than 780Ti in Project CARS?

Undoubtedly AMD produce some great chips. However, you can't help but wonder if AMD put more effort into thier own IP like tressfx and mantle, which were both solid ideas, developers would be more inclinded to support AMD's software and then maybe the reviewers would be showing nvidia cards running AMD features.

On topic:

It is frutstraiting that a thread about AMD's divers turned back into: Nividia bad.

I believe GameWorks' default tessellation factor in TW3 is set to 64x.

This would hammer all AMD cards.

AMD is recommending turning down tessellation factor to 8x.

16 should be fine for tahiti + . i am yet to see any game or benchmark where you can see a difference between 16x and anything higher. 8 to 16 can be quite noticeable.

64X tesselation should not hammer Tonga that bad?

But Tonga currently is crippled and has only 2GB of Vram.

New 15.5 Driver Coming For Witcher 3 And Project Cars

http://wccftech.com/amd-announces-w...driver-coming-boost-tessellation-performance/

AMD is committed to improving performance for the recently-released Project CARS and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. To that end, we are creating AMD Catalyst™ 15.5 Beta to optimize performance for these titles, and we will continue to work closely with their developers to improve quality and performance. We will release AMD Catalyst™ 15.5 Beta on our website as soon as it is available.

After Nvidia again? Perception perception, Nvidia has Day 1 drivers, and they usually work very well. Last AMD driver was months ago. Plus Nvidia will probably have a fat old tweaking guide for big titles to boot too. AMDs lack of resources is really beginning to affect it.

Nvidia Day 1 driver is having a lot of issues with the game and other games. Please read the thread.

Cheers.

Yes and no. Yes the lack of AMD resources probably hinders a more timely release but no it probably still wouldn't matter if they had more resource $$ unless they could convince the developer to make Nvidia open up their source code.

Two things. First I notice AMD being MUCH more responsive on their website to acknowledging driver issues and promising to address them. For example, they were definitely not ready for a CF profile with FarCry 4 BUT have it now and it plays well.

Second, from what I read the real chorus of complaints from posters about Witcher3 (I don't own it) is from Nvidia owners where the camp seems to be splitting between Maxwell users and Kepler users.

FC4 required a game patch for Crossfire. AMD had no choice but to wait for it.

@Guskline: What case do you have?

Sometimes taking your time for quality is better then getting driver out ASAP,personally have no issues even with CAT 14.12s on TW3 and I have most settings on ultra@1080p,still get 60fps indoors and 45-50 fps outdoors.

Only had one freeze and that was the well known inventory game bug issue reported by many users on both sides of the camp(trying the unlimted frames setting suggested here and so far that is working out fine).

End of the day very happy with stability and performance so far on TW3 with my 280X OC.

Happy gamer here :).

The game was made closely with Nvidia and released May 19th, AMD has new driver out on the 22nd. I don't know if it's me getting older, but the things people complain about, 1st world problems and all that... Geez...

Actually the driver posted above is an older driver.

Anyway, I don't think AMD felt the need to have a specific Witcher 3 driver available at launch since the game is already playing well with current AMD drivers on single GPU setups. (after disabling nvidia hairworks of course)

And if hairworks matters that much to you, then you can just try the tessellation tweak....I didn't bother, hairworks doesn't mean that much to me, so I just leave it disabled.

I'd be surprised if a new AMD TW3 specific driver increases performance much more with single AMD GPUs.
But of course, we'll all take take any free performance improvements if they are there.LOL

Its the multi-GPU users who are waiting for a new TW3 driver to fix x-fire performance.
For now, I'm running with x-fire disabled on a single GPU and have no complaints.

TW3 isn't the same situation as FC4, AMD should be able to get a working x-fire profile pretty quickly.
Once AMD releases a proper x-fire driver for TW3, then the multi-GPU AMD users will be happy too.

How often do we get leaks of AMD drivers?
We usually get them a lot, and they are usually leaks of official beta drivers.
And the official betas usually follow very soon after.

But that doesn't seem to be the case with this particular leak though.
I think that is why AMDMatt posted in that thread, just to let people know that this one isn't the same as the official 15.5 beta driver AMD is working on with optimized Driver Support for Project CARS and The Witcher 3 as mentioned by AMD HERE
