Witcher 2, What Happened?

So, the wife pestered me to upgrade our computer so we could play The Witcher 2 with all the bells and whistles on and we then sat down to play.

Since we enjoyed the first Witcher game, we knew we would enjoy this one.

But, I'm the one playing the game and she's watching and "telling" what to do. So the level of frustration hit dying over and over and over again.

This is playing the game on the normal setting, but after getting my ass handed to me, I feel like I need to play this on the uber-super easy setting.

So what happened with The Witcher 2? I don't remember the first one being this difficult. I was able to incorporate magic along with knowing the proper sword to use against whom, but this game seems unrelenting.

I don't know if it's just me or if anyone else is feeling the same level of frustration with this game.

It gets easier. Just dodge more and you'll avoid a lot of hits.

lol, that's all I've been doing. I'd strike and roll, strike and roll.

Get's old real fast.

I mean did they change the combat mechanics that much to wear I can kick ass in the first game and completely suck in the second? Seems odd.

I think The Witcher 2 has kind of a negative learning curve. Stick with it, buy some kickass armor and weapons about halfway through, and you'll be fine.

And yes, lots of dodging/rolling. :)

(Of course, I imported my TW1 save file into TW2, so all of my orens carried over... I was able to buy some pretty awesome equipment)

Oh snap, I forgot that TW1 savegames would come over.

Maybe I should start over and then import my character over to TW2.

I don't know how many times the wife and I played Mass Effect from the very beginning to ensure we were happy with our character by the end of ME2.

Learn how to do combos, then you'll start kicking serious ass..

Basically, the key to doing combos is to press the attack key as soon as your blow connects. After you hit your enemy 3 or 4 times consecutively, Geralt will enter a "berserk" mode and start to move faster and his blows will do more damage.

Also pay attention to the targeting icon, because that determines who or what you're attacking. A lot of people just assume that you're going to attack whatever is directly in front of you, but thats not necessarily true.

Yeah.. combat is a bit harder than the first one. I takes a lot of patience to defeat enemies.. and dealing with 3 enemies at the same time is PIA. MAKE SURE YOU AVOID GETTING ATTACKED FROM BEHIND.

IIRC the only thing that carries over is some of the gear (this being an RPG of course, you'll replace it before long) and a few of the decisions that you'd made. I wouldn't bother restarting for it.

TW2 starts off quite tough and gets much easier as you gain skills and better gear.

All you have to do is dump all your money into swrords and you'll soon become a god among anything that has a pulse. Yellow, red and blue diamond silver swords rape anything that isn't human, and finding high damage weapons to kill human types is easy enough. Its all in the swords, 20 to 30 + damage range makes the game a breeze.

Wow you have a wife that likes to watch you play video games? Where do you find those?

I had the same experience. Combat in tw2 is quite hard at first. Dodging is extremely important when facing multiple foes.

I think it just takes quite a lot of practice to master. And good gear ofcourse. Do not under any circumstaces rush the main story - as tempting as it may be at times. You'll miss out on important gear and that'll bite you towards the end of the game.

Import a save from the Witcher 1, and use the better equipment that you had there. Once you do that the beginning part is MUCH easier. I only died a few times, and I assume it is because I used the better equipment that I imported form the original game.

Another tactic that works well in this game is to use an Yrden sign on the ground to trap an enemy, then hit him until he is able to block, then roll away and repeat. Also, use a Quen sign on your self to survive any attacks against you.

Focus on offensive swords and the game isn't too tough. It's a little more 'action-RPGish' than some people are used to though. The boss battles are very much like this...

My biggest suggestion is be aggressive in standard battles and avoid being flanked; for bosses, be patient and more defensive.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions. I guess this weekend the wife and I will start the series over and do things properly.

That's your problem right there. That would be super annoying.. lol

The game definitely gets easier as you go. The perks you unlock, make sure you upgrade Quen and also get the perk that removes the enemies "attack from behind bonus". Those are huge, the game really does start easing up after you do that. Takes patience, fortunately for me I was really immersed in the game and didn't mind so much the constant dying early on. :)

Interesting. I'm going to start Witcher 2 and the last game I played was Dark Souls.

Are we talking that it's Dark Souls hard? Or am I going to be ok?

While I have never played Dark Souls, it isn't that hard of a game. It is harder than most modern games, but if you were to compare it to say Mike Tysons Punchout, Ninja Gaiden, or Castlevania, it is very easy. You just won't be able to get through the whole game without dying. You will die, and somewhat often, but none of the fights are so hard that you can't win unless you have perfect reflexes. Although you may have to figure out a new strategy on some, as the same strategy doesn't work for everything.

It is just a game where you aren't a total god compared to the other characters. You are better than most other characters, but the difference is more in your skill and abilities than your strength. If you go in guns ablazing, then you are likely going to die. If you plan out your fights, then you should win since you are slightly faster and stronger than everyone, plus you have magic and potions that give you extra advantages that they don't have.
