You should get the best sounding headphones you can afford, or are comfortable spending, then add a modmic or a desktop mic. I use DT 770 Pros and a Audio Technica USB mic. If you dont want to spend that much on headphones, the JVC RX700/RX900 are very good for the money. I use M50s at work, and they are really good as well, and I'm sure they would be great for gaming.
Typically, the problem with gaming headsets is build quality. Cable connections or the mic usually break. If you dont mind buying a new set every once in awhile, gaming headsets are cost effective and convenient.
