Wise to buy Monitor online?

I'm in the market for a Sony E400 19" Monitor. Staples has it for $550. www.atacom.com has it for $467. Staples will match the price, plus shipping and tax. Which only saves me about $10 or $20. But I can get an extended warranty at Staples, don't know anything about a warranty online. Yet Staples doesn't have it in stock and online does. So is it better to save money and buy online? And does anyone know of a cheaper place online. I ordered my mobo from Atacom, so I have some trust in them.

You can get G400 from onvia for $458 after coupon.

I'd say it's good to buy low to mid-end model from online, much cheaper than from local. However, for high-end model, better to pick up from local by yourself. You know how the ups guy handling the mon.

The Sony G-400 is a great monitor, but it is poorly packaged by Sony so you might get a few of them with dents and cracks. I returned five Sony G-400 Monitors to Onvia because they were damage in route to my home. I don't think it was UPS', FEDEX's or Onvia's fault that the monitors arrived damaged. SONY has to do a better job of packaging these large monitors. The SONY G-400 comes with four little pieces of styrofoam that barely protect the monitor. In the end I got the monitor from buy.com - The point to this story is if you are going to order a monitor from a on-line merchant make sure you find from where they are shipping the monitor. For instance, if you live in California you don't want them shiping you a monitor from a warehouse in New York - the longer the carrier has it the better are the chances that you will receive a damaged monitor because of poor packaging. Unless you want to pay from NEXT DAY AIR! That's up to you.

Rosiarian brings up a good point. Sony packages their monitor with bascially 4 pieces of styrofoam, one for each corner. that's it. there's nothing between the box and the glass screen nor is there anything between the box and the back of the monitor.

So that's why i opted to pay a little more and go to a local retailer and pick it up myself. It costed more cuz of tax, but it was for piece of mind.

I got a G400 from Onvia.....Shipped from TN to CA.....The box looked fine...but when I opened it the monitor had shifted during shipping and the styrofoam was broken just like they are saying.....No damage to monitor...It works great.....great price too....
