ok so i have two wisdom teeth coming in sideways which will cause my lower teeth to "buckle". i dread this and am wondering if there is any way that i can not have them taken out? i am very susceptible to pain and just thinking about it makes me not mind if my teeth buckle and mess up my wonderfully straight teeth (i had braces). but of course that's dumb. i really should grow up i know! hehe. anyways, i'm 22 and that's like a really late age to be worrying about this. is there anyway the teeth will just stay there and not push the teeth anymore? maybe it's stopped moving or something. the dentist told me that he wants to take them out possibly december or summer when i come back which tells me it's not urgent.

anyways, what can i expect when i get them out? they put u to sleep right??? the dentist was also telling me they have to talk to the oral surgeon about it since i have nerves in the back blah blah blah and that it might be dangerous to do it. i was literally turning green. BLEH!

somebody reassure me that it's not ALL that bad please... :p

oh and i was also wondering why does rinsing your mouth with water and salt help bleeding gums?

Kills the bacteria, which promotes healing.

You should get them pulled. They are pretty good these days and it shouldn't be too bad. Just ask to be gassed during the operation ;)

I had mine taken out a couple years ago (I'm 19) and it was the worst thing I've experienced...seriously. They put me to sleep and had to drill into my gums and break the wisdom teeth up to make room for my other teeth to move back before I had my braces put on (I had an overbite).
I woke up in some serious ass pain. I was bleeding pretty bad for about a day or so afterwards....woke up with blood all over my pillow a couple times. Plus, to top it all off, I had to live on malts from McDonalds or Dairy Queen. It was OK for a while but it got very old fast. Can't remember when the pain stopped, I know it took at least couple days for the swelling and pain to go away.
Anyway, hopefully they'll stop coming in so you won't have to have surgery. If you do make sure you've got a truck load of Asprin waiting.

Edit: Added "thumbs down" icon ;)

Both my sisters had to have their wisdom teeth pulled. No biggie. They used local anesthesia for their. They weren't in a whole lot of pain. Plus they'll just do one side first. I myself was lucky and my wisodm teeth were going in straight. But they were going to push my lower teeth forward Leno style which I didn't want. So I opted to have my second molars removed and my wisdom teeth popped right into place.

supposedly mine were to have hurt more but they didn't hurt at all, i even managed to pull out my own stitches. strange feeling..... :)

i remember when i got mine pulled. there was nothing to it! you can ask to be put to sleep, if you want. i was awake (although heavily sedated) and all i felt was pressure but no pain. i only felt pressure, since 3 of the 4 wisdom teeth were not even out yet, and still inside the gums. dentist had to "dig" the 3 out. anyways, you should listen to the professional and have them taken out. that is unless if you want crooked teeth again, along with lifelong pain and infections caused by your sideways wisdom teeth. :p

I had both sides done at once. I suppose it depends on how they're coming in.

why do some people have pain afterwards and some don't? does it depend on how good the oral surgeon is??

I was 18 when I got mine taken out. An oral surgeon did it, he hooked me up to an I.V. I have no memory of the actual procedure, because whatever was in that I.V. made me feel really good before it knocked me out :)

As far as recovery, I didn't eat any solid food for a few days. Definitely don't try to eat Tostitos or Doritos for a while! Had to keep gauze in there to keep the bleeding down. Don't sleep on good sheets/pillows, because you may drool a little bit of blood the first night or two. All in all, it wasn't that bad for me. I'm glad I did it because my teeth were really getting crowded.

I just my 4 wisdom teeth pulled out 3 weeks ago. Here's the scoop. First, don't goto a regular family dentist to have it done. goto an oral surgeon, that is what they do for a living and they have the expertise to not hurt your gums and nerves during the operation. a regular family dentist might not. Second, you can choose to be put to sleep during the operation, it'll cost about $100-$200 extra but your insurance should cover most of it. For me, I didn't even feel a thing. If you are put to sleep, plan on spending the next 2-3 days at home eating nothing but soup. There's no pain. Just inconvience. Also, plan on not eating anything hard for 3 weeks. That's it. I'm glad I have my widsom teeth out, it feels so much better.... and I believe I am even wiser :)

I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled out at once last year. Went to an oral surgeon, had general anesthesia, was eating Italian food in 2 days.

My sister went to another surgeon... she was stuck in bed, eating yogurt, and popping pain-killers for about a week...

YMMV :)

Edit: Misspelled YMMV :(

Well let's see what I can tell you because I just had all 4 of mine pulled a month ago.. let's see
The dentist puts you to sleep and numbs you up so you have nothing to worry about painwise until later but I'll get to that,

First they give you oxygen, then introduce you to laughing gas that makes you giddy and removes nervousness, then after that they put in the IV needle into your arm which I didn't even feel myself, then they ask you to count to 20 and I only made it to 6 before I blanked out and went to sleep.. in what feels about 2 seconds later you wake up (in my case very cranky) thinking the surgery hasn't been completed yet but it is, and you are so numbed you can't feel anything, and after about a minute they tell you to go home with whoever brought you..

Doctor will prescribe codeine for you to keep the pain away.. I never needed it and I had all four as impacted molars (bad) two of which were under the gums (also bad painwise) and two others that were of the easier type where the already emerged, either way I experienced little pain and barely needed the codeine at all, I just took it to go to sleep, I never was in any noticable pain.. took about a week to heal up and life was normal again.. however I lost 20 pounds over the week if you can picture that I was afraid of solid food and just food in general so I just drank which wasn't anything but water and milkshakes.. but after 4 days I started solid foods but still didn't have much of an apetite because of the Cephalexin they also prescribe which lowers white blood cell counts and makes you feel nauseated in my case no matter what I did..

Only thing scary and truly bad about the whole thing was worrying about getting a dry socket the first 5 days.. but that never happened..

<< oh and i was also wondering why does rinsing your mouth with water and salt help bleeding gums? >>

Mainly it soothes the gums and keeps them from getting covered with food which would get them infected.. i used more salt then they said and it seemed to work better and since you can't pick at that area for awhile the only way to get out the food is to rinse your mouth out..

Anyway hope this helps ya and really it's not bad, only thing that sucked was being stuck indoors away from friends for a whole 4 days.. boring as hell.. now that was true pain.. ;)
One thing to get across to you though is that everyone's experience and recovery speed differs so ask the doctor the level of pain you will experience.. he said mine would be a 4 out of 10 and I had no pain at all so aim for 4 or lower.. also you are only getting two taken out so there goes half the pain level if any right there..

I wouldn't recommend it.. I may have lost 20 pounds at the time but I gained back 30 after life became normal again.. :frown:
