Wisdom teeth out today!

Don't remember a thing from having IV started to waking up in my bed at home. No after effects from the anesthetic (first time for any pain killer, never even had Novacaine), and the Percocet is taking care of most of the pain in my mouth. Bleeding stopped after about 6 hours, and except for the slight mouth pain, I feel fine.

<--- very lucky. Doc told me it would be easy though. I paid my dues in pain from having recurring infections (2-4 times per year) and severe soreness for the last 4-5 years.

It wasn't really that bad for me either now that I look bad on it.

The 10 punds or so of gauze in my mouth however was fvking killer.

Mine were just horrible.... did you have all 4 pulled? My top ones were fine, the bottoms were a different story. Talking about f*cking pain.... I lived on mashed potatoes for a week or more.

Damn, all these experiences are cake compared to my surgery a couple years ago. I was administered laughing gas. Bleeding didn't stop for almost 3 days. Every single tooth in my lower jaw ached horribly as all of my teeth had to be wedged together and away from my wisdom teeth to get it out. I hated it. I'm glad it's done though. I hope I never have to experience anything like that again. *shakes head*

Likewise. 🙁

I stopped bleading in about 45 minutes. And I had a fully impacted molar, and 3 partly impacted. I didn't get nox, just novacaine, and I was of percocet after just a day. I got lucky.

Yep, it was supposed to be conscious sedation, but it apparently just killed my memory. My wife says I was talking on the way back home, but I have no recollection.

Yep, all four. They were all visible and standing more or less upright, which is why the doc was very optimistic for a good surgery.

i'm getting mine pulled tomorrow.

Good luck! Worst part for me (so far) was the IV, and that was only very temporary and not that bad. 😉

I take it you had the IV Valium - that's the conscious sedation I had when I had my wisdom teeth removed, and later when I had a colonoscopy.

As long as you follow the directions you're given, the recovery is no big deal at all (or at least it wasn't for me).

Were you trying to keep them for some reason? I thought most people had their wisdom teeth removed when they were 18-21, no?

My Mom is a nurse and told me that unless they were bothering me, I shouldn't have them removed (talked about the knee jerk reaction regarding surgery in this case). Well, they started to bother me, but for various reasons (insurance, military school, stationed overseas), I couldn't have them done for the past five years. I was actually scheduled for surgery about 2 years ago, but I lost any confidence at all in the surgeon prior to having it done and waited until we came back to the US.

Give it a day - when I had mine out last fall days 2 & 3 were the worst.

I'm kind of expecting that, actually. 🙁

Anesthesia is for pussies.

Having teeth ripped from your jaw without anesthetic? THAT I'd like to see! Incidentally, I've had about 8 fillings (including one refill) without any anesthetic. 😉

Getting them out was nothing, it was the pain of having them in that was the pain in the ass for me. It was only a little annoying not being able to eat steak for a week, but I cheated after three days.

This makes my stomach turn. My wisdom teeth should have been yanked long ago, but I thought "I'll do it later, what's the rush?" Well, when I was older, like in my late 30's, my dentist pipes up and says,"You should have had those extracted a long time ago, you have big roots anyway, and now they are enormous" And then he shows me an xray, and he wasn't kidding! They are huge. He said they are about the biggest ones he has ever seen, and that means PAIN when I do get them yanked.

I was about to go ahead and schedule the right side (the worst ones), then a friend calls me, and tells me his horror story. He and his wife, who's in her 3rd year residency towards being an OB/GYN, set up a great vacation to Aruba (might have been Cancun, can't remember) He's having his wisdom teeth yanked two weeks before, plenty of time to be recovered by the time they go. He has it done, is out during the whole deal. He comes home and he's feeling ok, but it hurts on the left side when he chews, and it doesn't really matter what side he chews on, it just hurts. Not horrible, but it's there. He tells the guy who yanked the teeth and he "checks" him and says all is well, it's just taking a little longer to heal than it should.

So he's on his trip and someone offers him some kind of beef jerky stuff. He starts chewing it, and CRACK! His upper jaw breaks. He said the pain was amazing. Vacation over! They fly back and he goes to another guy, since the first one is on vacation himself and the Xrays show a huge crack in his upper jaw and he has to have surgery to fix it. Afterwards, he's back at the first guy's office, and the he's aplogizing, saying he had no idea, etc. Then he shows my friend the original xrays taken after the teeth were pulled, and there was the crack, plain as hell! After six weeks, he finally felt ok last week, well enough to lay off the pain pills for the first time.

Now the lawyer is getting involved..

Wow. That's about all I can say. I'm 33 so I'm not a spring chicken. Best to get them done as soon as possible because every delay makes it worse. The problems with leaving them in are worse down the road, including losing your "normal" molars as well.

Getting them out was nothing, it was the pain of having them in that was the pain in the ass for me.

Me too. I had some searing pain from infections which rendered me unable to eat for days at a time. That was more than a little annoying. Last pain I had was on my left side for about three weeks. It wasn't really intense but very persistent. I was already scheduled for the surgery at that point.
