At the end of the month, I'll be gettin my wisdom teeth pulled. I looked at the estimates and to put me to sleep with gas will cost about $250. I'm trying to cut some costs here since money is tight.

For those that have had their teeth pulled out, how bad is the pain? Can I skip that and save $250 and just endure it?

Search off-topic for "wisdom". You'll get at least 7 different threads from people asking the same question.

I went cheap and just did novacaine too. Nothing horrible. Any real man can take the pain. Actually your gums are really numb and will feel a sharp pain only when they get the wrench to rip it out. But like I said, any real man can take it.

Oh man you would have major balls to go with no drugs. They had to saw my jaw to get mine out. Best thing EVER is when they hook you up to the drugs and say count down from 10. 10, 9, 8....I'm passed out. That's the last thing I remember. And waking up just RULES. Talk about being totally lit up. Reading magazines upside down, thinking you are a superhero. It just rocks!

Skip the gas and use Novacain. I had 3 pulled at the same time and didn't hurt at all. Ice your jaws afterwards and you may not even have to use any pain killers. I was drowsy for most of the day and had to be careful about what I eat for 2-3weeks.

I just got shots of whatever they use (novacaine?), and didn't feel a thing, even when the doc was just wrenching on my jaw trying to get them out. Later I had some pain but the vicoprofen cured that very nicely.

depends how much cutting they have to do... are any impacted?

my bottom two were impacted. i had IV (the good stuff) and was given oxycontin and Tylenol-3 after the surgery. the pain might have been there - i honestly was too wacked out to know.

If the wisdom tooth is just sticking out waiting to be pulled, Novacaine is fine. Your dentist wouldn't gas you unless you needed it.

I have to go under general anesthisia to get my lower right one out though... its turned at a 90 degree angle into my jaw. :Q

skip the "gas", and just have local anesthesia. you won't feel a thing, and you can save those bucks.

oh just another quick tip - you can use tea bags in place of gauze. teas contain a natural clotting agent. once there are big bloody holes in your yapper, it's all about the clotting. :)

real men cannot take the pain of 4 fully impacted wisdom teeth and that electric saw thing they used to cut a piece of your jaw bone out. no sir. no real man.

see if you can get the injection into your IV that puts you to sleep and makes you feel like you're floating.

The people here who are saying "just get local anesthesia you pvssy" obviously have never faced an impacted wisdom tooth or the removal of a piece of their jaw before.

in summary: get them do a local freeze instead of gas its cheaper afaik and the pain isn't intolerable by any measure. get tylenol 3s after. go nuts. :D

Well, I had an implant put in just under a local. I imagine drilling a hole in my jawbone and twisting in a self-tapping titanium screw is at least *somewhat* similar. Maybe it's because I have a kickass oral surgeon, but when I left the office they told me to take ibuprofen if it hurt and if it still hurt after that to take the vicodin but don't drive. I never even had to take the ibuprofen. There was no pain at all.

The implant was installed to replace an ankylosed (fused to the jawbone) tooth that had been removed....also under a local anesthetic.
