Shooting breaks out at Sikh temple in Wisconsin: witnesses

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - At least one gunman opened fire during morning services on Sunday at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, and remained on the loose inside the temple, possibly holding hostages, according to witnesses.

Police, ambulances and the fire department were on the scene at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, located about 20 minutes south of Milwaukee.

The dispatcher for Oak Creek Fire Department said first reports of the shooting came in about 10:30 a.m. local time (11.30 a.m. EDT).

"We do have a shooting," she said. "Our whole department is out there, and others as well." She did not have details on any possible victims.

Police officials declined to comment.

It was unclear how many people may have been wounded in the shooting. But two witnesses said the shooter or shooters were still inside the building.

Carolyn Bellin, spokeswoman for Froedhart & The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, told CNN two men had been brought in and one was undergoing surgery.

So far, no info on who the shooter(s) is/are.

The local Sikh temples/churches seem to always be full of controversy/discord. Why can't religious people manage to agree about their "own god?"

man, there's some sikh people out there.

oh-you-show.jpg

For people whose religion mandates carrying a knife, has had such a tumultuous history, is prized for its warriors and has suffered (and still suffers) from repression in their own country, the sikh guys I know are all really peaceful people. Though I suppose any religious/political debate can get quite heated and tends to bring out the worst.

I can't believe I just complimented an entire peoples and it wasn't even sarcastic... I can fix this...

And I also appreciate the kids' and teenagers' muffin-headed boy turbans.

Whew...

The police officer put his life on the line and most likely save many people. I hope he is not too seriously injured.

Do more guns create more problems or would more guns have saved people in this case? Chicken or the egg question.

Who are they blaming in P&N, muslims or christians?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IN MHO, somewhat the wrong question. When we should be asking what the Sikh religion is and stands for. Especially when a little research shows the Sikh religion is neither Christian or Muslim. But still Sikh share many traditions of Christianity and Islam, in their belief in momothemism, community sevice, and is maybe better than both in its stand on the equality of the sexes.

The Sikh religion was born in the late 15'th century in the region between India and Pakistan
and now numbers only 30 million adherihants, and some of them have emmigrated to other countries included the US.

But like many other 1'st and 2'nd generation immigrant groups that have joined th great American melting pot, such groups tend to seek a regional stronghold and flock togther.

As for me, it was never on my radar screen that there were a consentration of Sikh's South of Milwakee. Nor for that matter, did I ever read about Sikh activists throwing their weight around in the region or causing ethnic tenions.

But a lone nut does not need a rational reason to kill innocent and harmless fellow Americans. My heart goes out to those innocent Sikhs killed and wounded, plus the American cop who was severely wounded trying to stop the nut.

In total, seven people died in the attack in Oak Creek, a suburb of Milwaukee, including the gunman. A police officer and two other men were critically injured.

Sad news to read about. :(

For those unfamilair w/ Sikhism:

Sikhism at a glance
  • Sikhism is a monotheistic faith founded more than 500 years ago in South Asia
  • Observant Sikhs do not cut their hair; male followers often wear turbans and do not shave their beards
  • The faith has about 27 million followers worldwide. There are up to 500,000 Sikhs in the US, where they have sometimes been confused with Muslims
  • In Sept 2001, an Arizona gas station owner, Balbir Singh Sodhi, was shot dead by a man said to be seeking revenge on Muslims for 9/11
Sikhs express shock after shootings at Wisconsin temple.

Oak Creek, Wisconsin (CNN) -- The gunman who shot six people to death and wounded three others during a rampage at a Sikh temple in a Milwaukee suburb was an Army veteran who may have been a white supremacist, according to a law enforcement source involved in the investigation.

The name of the shooter, who himself was killed by police after wounding an officer, may be released as early as Monday morning, the source added.

Earlier, the FBI had said it had not determined a motive for the Sunday morning shooting and that investigators were looking into whether the attack might be classified as domestic terrorism.

Tom Ahern, a spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said the gunman had a military background but would not elaborate. He also would not elaborate on the man's tattoos.
Kanwardeep Singh Kaleka, a member of the five-year-old temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, said those inside the gurdwara -- or Sikh house of worship -- described the attacker as a bald, white man, dressed in a white T-shirt and black pants and with a 9/11 tattoo on one arm -- which "implies to me that there's some level of hate crime there."

Because of their customary beards and turbans, Sikh men are often confused for Muslims, and have been the targets of hate crimes since the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington.

While officials try to piece together what prompted the man to go on his shooting spree shortly before the main Sunday morning service, America's Sikh community struggled to come to grips Monday with the brutal attack.

"It's probably somebody not in their right mind," Justice Singh Khalsa, a temple member since the 1990s, said late Sunday. "It's possibly a hate crime, somebody not understanding the religion."

The victims ranged in age from their late 20s to about 70, said Khalsa, who helped translate witness accounts for authorities.

I have to praise the Sihk leaders who stated that this was a crime against humanity, instead of following the poor lead of the FBI and stating this was terrorism. My heart goes out to the Sihk, and the other Muslim-appearing peoples of our country, who have been targeted by bigots and hate mongers ever since 9/11. Our prayers are with you all.

I'm sure they'd feel happier knowing you'd actually spelled the name of their religion correctly. Right now, it looks like you just jumped on the bandwagon to be PC.

Oak Creek, Wisconsin (CNN)
-- Soldier. Singer. Skinhead.

Investigators spent Monday trying to figure out what led 40-year-old Wade Michael Page from repairing missiles for the Army to a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee, where he was killed by police at the end of a Sunday morning rampage.

The shaven-headed Page, whose tattoos included the Celtic cross adopted by white supremacist groups, had been the front man for a white-power rock band called "End Apathy" for several years. Two former neighbors identified him from photos on the band's MySpace page.

His path appears to have taken him from Colorado to Milwaukee, where he enlisted in the Army in 1992; back to Colorado; to North Carolina, where he started the band; and then back to the Milwaukee area, where he had been "a short time" before the shootings, Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards told reporters Monday.

The Army trained Page first as a mechanic for the Hawk anti-aircraft missile system, then as a psychological warfare specialist. He rose to the rank of sergeant before losing a stripe due to "patterns of misconduct," according to a Pentagon official who spoke on condition of anonymity. In October 1998, he received a general discharge under honorable conditions, the official said.

Christopher Robillard of Oregon, who described Page as "my closest friend" in the service more than a decade ago, said Page was pushed out of the military for showing up to formation drunk.

He described Page as "a very kind, very smart individual -- loved his friends. One of those guys with a soft spot. " But even then, Page "was involved with white supremacy," Robillard said.

"He would talk about the racial holy war, like he wanted it to come," Robillard said. "But to me, he didn't seem like the type of person to go out and hurt people."

Sikh is actually pronounced like "sick" instead of "seek."

Yea, I just learned that during this incident. The long E sound is due to British influence, and accent. It's not entirely incorrect, but not the preferred pronunciation.

True, but there is a time and a place for everything and 6 people are dead because of this piece of shit. And no, there aren't 7 people dead. There are 6 people dead and one worthless sack of shit who deserved a fate worse than death.
