I just don't know where to start... wow. Can he be serious? Maybe single parent households aren't the most ideal type of family to grow up in, but child abuse?

DAMN! D:eek:_O

A Wisconsin lawmaker has proposed legislation that would require the state to officially declare single parenting as child abuse.

Republican Senator Glenn Grothman presented Senate Bill 507 which would require the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board to emphasize that non-marital parenthood is a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.

The bill would also require educational and public awareness campaigns to emphasize that not being married is abusive and neglectful of children, and to underscore "the role of fathers in the primary prevention of child abuse and neglect."

The U.S. Census Bureau stated that in 2009 there were approximately 13.5 million single parents in the U.S., with single mothers outnumbering single fathers five to one. In the state of Wisconsin, single-parent households make up a third of households.

What does he want to do, make divorce illegal? There should be consequences for lawmakers to introduce shit like this, consequences like getting shot in the face.

What about when a spouse dies? This guy is serial crazy. There should be a mental competency test for all those seeking office.

"contributing factor" does not = "is". The thread title and the chan3000 headline is misleading at best but in reality just a plain old lie.

But really it's not really a big issue anyway except to freak leftists who need their outrage of the day. It most likely won't pass anyway... sheesh.

Hey, when you usurp the constitution, this is what you get. Way to go liberals, for opening the door for these kind of shenanigans.

Whether it passes or not it is insane.

Of course you support the insane.

So you can knock a chick up, ditch her, and then when the baby is born, you can get her thrown in jail for child abuse, moving the baby to foster care and absolving you of any financial responsibility? Talk about win-win!

A Wisconsin lawmaker has proposed legislation that would require the state to officially declare single parenting as child abuse.

It's undesirable sure, but something to be officially declared as child abuse?

This sheer retardation from the lawmaker will never make it to the governor's desk, let alone passed into law. Never fear OP, you are safe from harm.

Dont think children have a choice. A lot of people just choose not to get married. They choose to suck on the Government Teat. It is a child or an accident. They should have had free contraception paid by the government.

No...he didn't officially declare single parenthood as child abuse...as previously stated, the article headline and thread title are both lies. But it's still a really dumb piece of legislation.

FORBES

From the bill:

"Section 1. 48.982 (2) (g) 2. of the statutes is amended to read: 48.982 (2) (g) 2. Promote statewide educational and public awareness campaigns and materials for the purpose of developing public awareness of the problems of child abuse and neglect. In promoting those campaigns and materials, the board shall emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.

Section 2. 48.982 (2) (g) 4. of the statutes is amended to read:
48.982 (2) (g) 4. Disseminate information about the problems of and methods of preventing child abuse and neglect to the public and to organizations concerned with those problems. In disseminating that information, the board shall emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect."

Are you referring to the part where it says "contributing factor"?
Trying to make sense of your objection.

Yes...child abuse and neglect are more prevalent in single family homes (fact). This bill is not saying "Single Parenthood Is Child Abuse". Big difference.

Stupid legislation anyway.

If the bolded part is true, then it clearly says it's abusive.

Do you have a link to the actual legislation? You seem to be claiming to have more information than these articles.

Guess on that note he should make becoming a widow illegal as well. I have been a single parent for 8 years after losing my wife to cancer. Not gonna say it is easy, but I get compliments all the time at how well we are doing.
This lawmaker is an idiot plain and simple. There is no way that law could be upheld if passed.

edit: just got farther down the thread, thread title and article misleading
