ok. i am at my uncles house.

he had the house wired w/ cat 5 to every room.

the only problem is, is that there are only 2 pair available per run for me to wire. this would make it 10 base T no?

ok. the green, and white wires are being used for the phone jacks. the brownwhite, and brown wires, arent used at all (arent wired up to the plugs) and the only left over are the other 2 pairs.

the problem is is that the ends are not terminated, and i need to terminate them. i have never done this. i have in my possesion, an rj 45 crimper from rat shack, and 10 8 conductor modular plugs. i can still use the 8 conductor no? or do i have to go down to 6? i also have a router that i am planning on setting this all up on.

help me how do i wire this up?

Mixing Phone and LAN in the same wire is adding a "Little" Water to the car's gasoline.

You buy CAT5 wire (home depot).

You do wire "Fishing"

You tie the end of the existing Wire to two long CAT5 wires and you pull from the other side. The old wire comes out and two new wires get in (one for Phone one for LAN).

The following links will provide an actual description of connections.

If you need to crimp, full instructions here.

ive dun wire fishing at my home back in ohio, im in california right now. and i have no idea wat the walls are like in this place how its insulated etc. i might have to end up doing it, but it will take me all weekend. and im goin to a giants game tonight. and i have no idea how much acutall wire i would need.

after looking around here, i have come to realize that each phone jack, also has 2 network ports in it. and they ran only one pair to each of those ports. so rewireing this i would be needing 3 cat 5 cables to each location, thus causing me to need 18 total runs of cable of unknown length. right now i only have an 8 port router, so i would have to tape off some of the plugs, and make only one useable in some of the rooms. also i would prolly need some more wire to make some connections from the computer to the port. this could be a fun little weekend if i end up doing this.

ya its an experience, and its cheaper. but wireless, now that i have learned what the hell is goin on here, would end up being easier, but ALOT more of a hassle for me cuz i will have to get up the protection, and cards for every computer, and every laptop they have. plus one for the server i am building. and i have never messed w// wireless.

hmmm. i gotta talk to my uncle see if he minds if i do this. cuz its gonna be a long day tomorrow if i do.

I also believe that mixing IS bad.

BUT you can get 100BT to work with 4 wires. 1 pair is 1&2 and the other is 3&6, but, good luck trying to get pin 6 wire in unless your vision is better than mine! It can not hurt to try one to see if it works out!

Well, according to your description, his wiring is already FUBAR (phone1 should be on 4&5 (blue pair) and phone2, 3&6 (green pair).

SO wire away!! you can't screw it up any worse than it already is ... and it's obvious that noone there cares about standards anyway.

(Just don't expect any kind of performance)

Good Luck!

Well, be redundant, leave a extra cable in the wall. Also leave at least 5 feet of extra cat5e out from the wall.

are there any secrets to getting the wire into the connectors? (male) i have the jacks(female) all wired up and they look perfect (well i have one room wired)

and i need to do 5 more. but i am having a hell of a time w/ getting the wires in correctly on the plugs. do i have to strip the 24ga wires at all or is it all good not stripped?
