I am getting ready to run Cat 5e through my attic into two wall plates and want to ensure that I wire the wall plates correctly. Here is what the setup will look like:

Router --> LivRm Wall Plate ---> Office Wall Plate --> Switch --> Computer, Server

How should the two wall plates be wired?

The router is a Linksys WRT54G. Switch is a Linksys 10/100.

Google "wiring 568b" and that will show you what pairs go to what pins. The jacks should have color coding on them on where you should punch down the colored and colored with white stripe pairs.

-edit-
568b is what you need.

Each wall plate / keystone jack will have a color code printed next to the punch-down grooves (the IDC - "Insulation Displacement Connector"). In face, there may be two ... one indicating "568a" and the other "568b" ... as long as you match the colors according to the same diagram, it should be fine. You want to go straight-through "in the wall" ... using whatever adapters of crossovers for the segment between teh wall and the device(s).

The only difference between 568a and 568b is that the orange and green pair are swapped (orange pair<==>green pair).

how many wires are you planning on cabling?

If you have more then 5 you could get a 12 port patch panel.

That is what I did at my house. All my cable drops go back to a patch panel. Easier to maintain and no need for cables dangling around the wall.

You can find cat5 jacks on ebay for cheap.

You will also need a punch down tool so you can get the cables in properly.

Or you can find a cheap wall jack/plate that will let you strip the cables and just screw in... like the telephone wall plates.
