The wife and I are in the market for a new home. We have seen about 60 thus far, with only 1 bid on 1 house that we liked. We were outbid....

Needless to say, when the time comes, I will be wiring all respective areas with gigabit lan. I plan to have my own study where I would like to store my network equipment/WHS server in the closet.

My question to you guys is, what the heck is the box thingy called that builders build into a closet area that houses switches/routers/cables etc? If anyone can provide me links to these as well I would greatly appreciate it!

$380 for a small cabinet? No thanks!

Was looking at something around $50-100. Just need to house a DLink DIR-655 and Linksys small 5 port gigabit switch. Guess I can make do with something from Home Depot/Lowes?

Yeah for something that simple, don't worry about big fancy locking cabinets. Go to your home supply store and buy some of that rack mounting they use in stores to hang shelving, then space them so that you can simply hang your equipment from bars mounted to it, or shelving.

We if you arent willing to spend the money on a proper cabinet, you can just make a shelf. Honestly i dont see the need for a proper cabinet for a wiring closet with less than 10 ports. See if you can find a nice looking shelf or just build one yourself.

The punch down fits perfectly into that enclosure, correct? This is EXACTLY what I am looking for. Can you also mount a DIR-655 inside that enclosure?

As a cable tech, i would suggest bringing all your coax and phone into that enclosure also. And an electrical outlet for your switch/modem/router ect.
if you are finishing your basement also bring a cable and phone feed into the box from where they enter the house, usually by the electrical panel. if your office isn't right there

you could, but you may want to leave the cover off for the wireless signal. if you haven't bought it how about a wired router or switch + a 802.11n AP connected to a jack near the center of the house? like on top of a kitchen cabinet out of site.

yup, there are spring loaded pins that lock it in after inserting tabs into there respective slots.

I used double sided tape for my switch on the hinged door. then made the jumpers long enough to open and close the door and zip tied them together.
