Wiring Cat 5e question...

Phokus

Lifer
Hi,

I have several questions about wiring a building:

1) What is the average time it takes to wire 1 strange of cat 5e cable on a floor to the wiring closet (given that it's being contracted out to a professional)? Someone told me about 10 minutes each wire, is that accurate?

2) What exactly is "crimping" a wire? And how long does it take to do? Are there any other procedures that you need to do to attach the RJ-45 jack onto the wire? And how long would those procedures take?

3) Would $45 an hour be a good estimate for how much you would pay the professional to wire a building?

Thanks in advance!

Depending on how you want the building wired, expect 30 minutes per cable run, with a max of 4 cables per run, and 10 minutes per cable in the run additional minus one. Meaning... 30 minutes for 1 cable, 60 minutes for a bundle of 4.

This is in post-construction which includes fishing wires throu ceiling and walls, cutting holes, installing plates, and punching down both ends of the cable, one into a patch panel, one into the wall jack. Expect 30 miuntes total for 4 wires if this is in new construction (installation of box, drilling holes, etc.

45 an Hour is about right for somone who does cable only (like an electritian). Try to find a company that will give you a flat quote of X per jack, Total Time, and Total wire feet he will charge BEFORE the work.

Hey thanks for the response... The first paragraph was kinda confusing, but i'll just assume that you mean that it'll take a total of 30 minutes for a wire run of 4 wires for a new installation.

Actually i meant 30 minutes for 1 cable.... BUT each additional cable in the same bundle (can be pulled at once) takes 10 more minutes (to put on ends, and snags). so 4 Cables is 60 Minutes roughly
