Wiring a new house

The house itself has ethernet outlets throughout the house done professionally using cat6 wire I think. We are in the middle of nowhere so we use Direcway satelite for internet. There are a total of 28 rj45 ports in the house and i'd like to have them all running or nearly so. Is the proper procedure to connect the satelite modem to a router and the router to a network switch? Is there a particular type of network switch I need? I've gone through newegg and there is a wide variety in terms of price and options I unfortunately do not understand fully.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes

No
CAT5e or CAT6, either will support gigabit speeds. The satellite link will be the bottleneck, but if you plan on really large file transfers among computers on your local network, get a gigabit switch. If you are really only sharing the internet and transferring an occaisional file, you can opt for a 10/100 switch.
I've seen 24 port 10/100 switches for as little as $25 and shipping on the FS/FT forums here. A decent 24 port gigabit switch will set you back $300 or so.

I believe with Direcway you have to setup Windows ICS on a computer to share the internet with a router hooked up to a switch.

AMDskip, thanks for that information. Ill look into that. I am getting a gigabit switch because I plan on setting up a media file server. I also want to be able to stream recorded tv programs anywhere.
