Wireless

Hello I wanted to know if there would be some kind of major improvement to gaming, browsing, and streaming if i were to get the Intel ultimate n-6300 wireless card?
From what I have heard its only good for transferring files etc.. between the network? I have had some People tell me that it wont do any good browsing etc.. I i had thought that it would give more mbps which would be comparable to my desktop computer that is directly hooked into the modem.

MOD EDIT: Moved to more appropriate Networking forum. - Zap

If your notebook on wireless browses web pages slower than your desktop hard-wired, it may OR MAY NOT be the fault of the WiFi card in the notebook. For instance my Core i5 notebook still browses web pages slower than my desktop even if I hard-wire it in. The difference is very little, but occasionally noticeable.

That might be your first step in finding out the bottleneck, by hard-wiring the notebook into your router just like your desktop, and then seeing if the web browsing performance picks up.

Even if it does pick up in performance, it may (or may not) be something that a replacement WiFi card can fix. Could the bottleneck be in your router? Do you have signal dead spots in your house? Is the design of your notebook hampering WiFi performance? (Ask early adopters of the Samsung Series 9 notebook about that one.) Is placement of the wireless router sub-optimal?

If you move to a 5 Ghz 802.11n router and card you could see significant improvements. The 2.4 Ghz spectrum is VERY crowded and becoming problematic unless your house is in the middle of nowhere. Bluetoogh, cordless phones and microwaves cause trouble. Other APs visible to you? BIG problem.

The problem isn't the card, it's likel the 2.4 ghz spectrum.

Download - inSSIDer - and run to look at your network traffic. Runs both 2.4 and 5GHz channels.

Technology is Not "Liberal Art" (or politics).

Describing issues in Technology have to include Numbers.

May be whatever you get Now is it, and there is No way to improve it.

Otherwise, list the components involved, measure the current "Speed" in various component and tell us the result.
