Hi folks,

I'm setting up Xbox Live wirelessly at home, using that Xbox wireless adapter MS makes. I had tried a Linksys one before, but it didn't work well at all. My network is 802.11b, so I don't know if that might be slowing me down. Anyways, if you don't mind, can you run your connection speed test and tell me what you are getting? For those who don't know, I mean from the main screen, like what you see with no disc in the machine, pick Settings... Network Settings... Connect, and then run the four "tests" and put the cursor over Done and hit Y.

I'm looking for the numbers next to UL, DL, L, and P. Just want to compare with what I have to see if XBL should be working properly.

Thanks in advance :)

Wireless is plenty fast for live only need about 256 to run it. Why don't you post your speeds.. THat would be easier to tell if its your wireless

I would love to help but unfortunately I hardwire it at home and it's only wireless during weekends @ my girl's place.

Oh ok, sorry. Was debating putting this in the networking forum, but sometimes those forums are a little slow. Mods, feel free to move this.

Here are my speeds, approximately:
UL: 120
DL: 1100
L: 53 (56)
P: 20/20

Thanks again :)

Actually can a mod please move this, or else it will keep falling off the front page and eventually fall into oblivion? I hate to x-post...

How far away is your XBox from your wireless router? Is it going through walls/floors of your house?

Yeah its pretty far actually. Wireless router is on the second floor, and Xbox is in the basement. I can move the Xbox to the first floor if needed, but basement is preferred. The guy at Best Buy (well, the 17-year-old clueless kid who probably just wanted to get me out the door with the hardware) said it should still work at that distance, but of course I am kind of skeptical. I'll give it a shot tonight.

What does the L/P stand for? That does seem like a long distance - there could be a lot of interference between the two, dropped packets and such. I really wouldn't play on Live wireless from that distance - it seems like you're bound to have some lag. The very worst - try it and see how it goes.

I agree with the clueless 17 year old at Best Buy. 802.11b is (in reality) about 6-8 times faster then your internet there's nothing to worry about as long as you connect. In fact even at the lowest possible transfer rate (I.E. more distance) it would still be as fast as your internet. Only thing you have to watch out for is if you have WEP on it might increase the latency.

L is latency (or lag), which was 100+ ms when I was using the Linksys router, but has dropped significantly now. That encourages me a lot.

P is packets/ping... so 20/20 I believe means that out of 20 packets sent, all 20 reached properly.
