Wireless Woes

I'll never understand why I have a laptop and a desktop practically side by side and my laptop gets a "very good" signal from the router at the full 54Mbps while my desktop wireless gets a "very low" signal at 6Mbps

stupid router should have a better range than this as I'm two rooms away

well, now that i keep checking on the signal, the actual speed that it's connect at varies from 54 to 48 to 11 Mbps. it can't make up its mind

and my desktop has a Linksys wireless card getting a signal from a Linksys router so i hardly think it's hardware

Probably coz your desktop has a PCI wireless NIC with the antenna sticking out the back of it, tower sits on the ground thus getting weaker signal? If it's on a desk then 😕

Linksys sells their own hi-Gain Antennas

or this has connectors to fit too

Hi-Gain 7dBi Omni-Directional Antenna

I can vouch that they do. I bought the D-Link Hi-Gain antenna for a client who wanted his wife's computer (which was in the basement) to get on their wireless network.

The card would not see the wireless network without the antenna. The second I added it, it saw the network and connected. She has not had a connectivity problem since.

I was skeptical at first, but I am a believer now.

Why are you blaming this on your router? If your laptop is getting a good signal from the same location then the signal there must be strong. When you have a wireless router and a wireless NIC made by the same manufacturer I suppose they "ought to" work well together, but that seems to not be the case.

even the laptop has flaky, varying signal strength

i might try one of those antennae. do you put them on the router or your NIC?

I believe they are available for both.
