Wireless Woes!!

I just recently purchased the Netgear 814 Wireless router and a Netgear PCI Wireless card. My router is about 80 feet away but it goes through a couple of walls and that causes it to totally lose the signal. I cannot move the location of either the router or the computer with the wireless card. Any suggestions on what the cheapest/easiest solution to this problem is?

I think the cheapest solution is to run a wire. I have the Netgear 614 and I couldn't get it to work 20 feet going through 1 wall. I had to move the router to the wall to get it to finally work.

There are antenna's and boosters and access points I guess you could set up every wall but that is expensive. It is cheaper to have a cable run I think. It is amazing they can receive a signal from a probe orbitting Jupiter but you can't buy a router that can transmit 80 feet!

Check on the D-Link site, or perhaps with Linksys, you could probably do yourself some good with a directional hi-gain antenna.

FWIW, I concur with the wired solution previously mentioned, it'll be MUCH more reliable.

Unfortunatly wired isnt a solution I can use.

Let's see....

Can't move the router, Can't move the PC, and can't go wired.

You'll have to upgrade the antennas on both the router and adaptor card and give that a shot.

Or stick a repeater in between the 2 and see if that works. Here's a home-made
solution. In case you have these parts.


If you can't do either of those, you just can't do it.


edit : or use some alternative, like powerline networks, etc.

scorpio, thanks for your help. I am currently looking into placing a repeater and replacing the antenna or possibly switching the nic card with a usb card so I could position it elsewhere.

why would you have to upgrade the antenna on both? The 814 has a spot for external antenna but I don't think his card does. I'm not sure though. A better antenna on the router should work fine.
