I'm sitting here in front of my computer sending my brother an email that I typed with my phone just for the sake of using my cell phone to send an email. :)

Wireless ain't that bad. Have you tried wireless notebook computing? Here at Carnegie Mellon University, we were the first one to implement a campus wide wireless network. The speeds are actually terrific. Wish I had a laptop to take advantage of it...

spoooon, you're just referring to wireless web on phone, right? i tried it over the summer, it's pretty unless.. unless i got bored and wanted to check out the game scores.. email is hellish to type on it, service is slow, few words per screen. much better after i canceled service, however my setup is still active somehow, it still sends the weather to phone every morning.. :D

I don't mind the news updates. Typing isn't too bad on my phone either. The program is pretty good about picking what word I'm typing. I need to see if it will pick cuss words. Looking around on the web is pretty useless though. Still, it's kind of cool.

i wouldn't mind getting me one of those. but for internet, it's just plain pointless. not that the connection is very fast, nor the screen is very big. heck, even a first grader can write faster than you can punch in the keys! :)

I think the wireless web is only useful to ppl who need the most up-to-date information like stock news etc... other than that, why would u use it? I mean, I dont HAVE to get my e-mails and news immediately, I can wait until I get home...

I cant' wait till the day when the internet goes truly wireless. Kinda scary though when ya think about it. How could anyone track down a hacker if they where on a wireless system? I could sit in the middle of central park and hack away. Hopefully some company is thinking of this and will come up will a way to prevent this. Doubt it though.

Speaking of hackers in the park. All cell phones in next few years will have a transponder feature so your mobile phone company can track your geographic location at any point. The benefit is good for 911 calls that can pinpoint your location. And the negative is your lack of privacy.

Wireless web, I think, is cool. Wireless access over your mobile phone is cumbersome because of the number pad. Until they can figure out a way to make text input easy, its not going to take off. One company, I think Samsung, has developed a phone/PDA combo that has a dynamic touch screen. So, when you need to make phone calls, the screen shows numbers. But when you need to input text, the screen changes to a keyboard layout. Now, that's a good use of the phone space!

I just wonder if i-mode will make it into the American market. I hope it does. It already has encryption protocols built-in. I hope the stock traders will push the acceptance of this technology in the U.S.

I love Wireless Web. It's actually alot faster than I thoght it would be. Plus I've got the new Samsung SCH 6100, and the screen kicks ass...2x as many lines as the StarTac + WBMP (image) support. I use it mostly for driving directions and yellowpages, and to check my email every once in awhile. THe yellowpages search is awesome, because once you find what you're looking for, you just click on it, and it dials. I like that.

Next semester I'm taking PHP, and I've already talked with the professor about writing a "scrape" script to allow a user to type in a URL and have it convert it to HDML or WML, and host it off of my class's server. He's already got HDML support setup in Apache, so I've been fooling around with coding stuff. My friend has been writing image compression utilities lately, and he wants to add some code to the script that will search, based on certain criteria (image size, page position, etc) for a logo-looking image, and convert it to a 1-bit WBMP, resize it to a size that will fit on a tiny screen and insert it into the "scraped" HDML or WML page (err, I mean card...stupid new lingo).

If it ever gets off the ground, I'll be sure to post the link. Who knows, maybe one day, you'll be able to view the forums on your cellphone thanks to me! But don't hold your breath! :)

Cool, there's been talk of something similar for a long time, but I've never seen it in action. Please send the link if and when you have a usable site. Wouldn't it be cool if you could design one page and based on your browser medium (i.e. mobile phone screen b/w, or SVGA 16.8M, etc.) the server would dynamically send content formatted appropriately for your device. It simplies the need to remember additional web addresses. http://Anandtech.com is the same no matter where you are at. Your idea could be on the backend of IIS or Apache processing millions of web pages for grateful users. =)

Everything starts somewhere. I wasn't on the internet when it first started but I am sure it was not the best thing in the world. Look at it now.
