so I get a christmas present of a Wireless pci slot adapter. (DWL-G520 to be exact) and i put it in and it works jsut find downstairs right next to the wireless router. So i bring it up to my room which is upstairs a bit. There is another router for wireless internet only about 10 feet away. I plug my computer in and start it up. The signal strength is low. I found in the list of two one that said very good (which I thought was the router up here) so i clicked to connect. When I did it like switched on me and was very low. I tried everything from moving the antennas to moving the computer and tin foil. I unplugged the router here when it was still connected to the internet with very low signal, and it still worked, so i knew it wasnt using the one closest. When I did find the high signal one, it said "waiting for network" for like 10 minutes then just gave up.

cliffnotes:
-wireless in my computer not detecting the router up here
-when I BELEIVE to have found it (but not sure) it wouldnt connect.
-wireless up here only about 10 feet away so distance isnt a problem

I would recomment uninstalling D-Link driver and utility....Install Netgear driver since Netgear utility is more polished and has Atheros latest driver 3.3.0.156 ....Remember you need to force install Netgear driver or it wont install...Now see if it can find your access point....

Is any other computer that successfully works with an Upstairs Access Point?

How the Access point is connected to the Network and is it configured correctly?

it is configured correctly, and will the netgear drivers work? cuase its a d-link adapter. there is a port for a lan cable, and that goes to the wall which ends up at router, and no, this is only computer.

Well since you computer works ok with the Wireless downstairs the drivers are OK, I would not touch them.

Since it does not work with the Access Point then something is not configures in the Access Point to be compatible with the computer.

1. Make sure that the Access Point has an IP that it is on the same band as the Router.
2. If you are using the Routers DHCP disable the one on the Access Point.

Make sure that what ever security is On it is also configured the same on the Aceess Point (or better off disable security and all filters until you get it to work).

Disable the router down stairs and disable I mean either fully unplug it or go into the router and disable it. Then try to connect to what ever connection you see (should be upstairs) and see what signal that is. Also a good tip to get good reception is to change the channel to 11, I did it to mine and my signal has been at a steady 70% apposed to 60-40% and always disconnecting (was higher before but I have no idea why it changed). Report back.

How about disabling the Access point, you might be surprised and find the signal from "downstairs" is strong enough to give you the connection you want.

i did, but no go. all of my connections are infrastracture.(notspelled right)well, at least the ones that get ANY sort of signal. I tried configuring it, but you cant change the channels for infrastracture connections, only ad-hoc. I disabled the router up here and I was still connecteced. By the way my house is,it is quite a distance to the downstairs router (up here is the access point and downstairs is the router) so it is very far and lots of walls.

cliffnotes:
1.unplugged access point up here still connected
2.cant change channel to my infrastacture(not spelled right) connection.
3.all ad-hoc connections show up as 0% signal
4. no profit....
