Dear All,

I recently moved into a new place, where my office is in a seperate building from the main house, seperated by about 15 feet. In my office, I run some computer programs which monitor financial markets and set up loud audio alarms if certain things happen. The problem is that I can't hear the audio alarms when I am in the house.

As a dumb short term fix, I bought a 50 ft speaker wire and am running it from the office to the house. This works fine but the wire makes it hard to shut the doors etc.

I also bought a baby monitor which I am planning on trying out, but I don't know how the range/reliability of this will be.

I guess I should buy some kind of wireless speaker system. I usually buy CREATIVE speakers for my PC... i researched a little on their website, but I am worried that the wireless transmitter may be weak and unreliable. I don't need to get very clear sound on the speakers, not going to be listening to music, etc. I just need some setup where the wireless transmitter is super reliable, and pretty strong so that it can go at least 50 ft, through some walls and things.

Cost is not important, most important is robustness / reliabilty

Any recommendations? Much appreciated.

For distance you want to go low frequency. With audio that is really easy because you don't need much bandwidth. Frequencies below 400Mhz can work for several thousand feet through walls, trees, etc using low power output. I would look at FM radio transmitters. They are in the right frequency range to give you good distance if the transmitter is of decent quality. I don't recommend car fm transmitters they are generally very short range.

The best solution would be one of the fm transmitter kits sold online but those require the user to solder them together. Look for home fm transmitters. Then you can use any radio for a reciever.

Thank you all for your advice.

I think I will go with the FX tranmitter idea, that sounds good. Then I could put receivers all over the place as I want.

Any recommendations for a misison critical one that won't let me down? If this thing crashes or doesn't transmit when it is supposed to, it is going to cause me A LOT of problems. Cost is not important. Most important this is reliability.

How about this one:

Any one think there is a better solution than FM transmitter?

Thanks a lot

if money is not a problem, have someone hard wire a cable run to your house. have a receiver in your house to receive the audio. this way you can adjust the volume and you have your amplification where you need it, also this will allow you to put speakers where ever you want. a simple buried cable run should not cost too much. you could also do it your self by stringing the cable in a small pvc pipe, burry it. drill holes in the wall and hook it up.
