Wireless Solution

Out here in Camp Leatherneck, a gigantic military base in the Afghani desert. They are in the planning stages of providing wifi and seem to be going in the wrong direction.

To me, this seems similar to creating a campus network in many ways. Some of the similarities-

-Peak hours
-Users with heavy bandwidth wants (ways to limit individual user)
-Many different buildings.

Some different factors-

-Security
-Heat/Dust
-Where to get the pipe in. (satellite or local)

Any thoughts or guidance on this. Any contractors out there with a solution?

You don't specify what the "wrong direction" is, so it's difficult to critique. However, most likely any information about a wireless network implementation on a military base is FOUO (if not outright classified), so posting more info is probably not the brightest idea. No doubt this network will have some unique requirements for the reasons you mention, and my wireless experience is relatively limited so I'm not the best person to comment. If wiring is a problem you may want to consider mesh APs (e.g. Aironet 1520). Of course any modern wireless solution should also involve centralized wireless controllers.

Spidey has done more wireless so he may have some ideas, but really, it's unlikely anyone here can help all that much given the limitations on the information you can provide.

Agreed - need a whole lot of information. I'd probably do some sort of outdoor mesh solution depending on how your wired network is setup. These are hardened APs made for such an environment. Some indoor ones as well. It would all be a wireless controller solution.
