Wireless Solution

My computer is upstairs. Cable modem and other computer are downstairs. I want to connect my upstairs computer to the cable modem somehow and still have it connected to the downstairs computer. I could get a router but I'd have to get ethernet cable all the way upstairs and my dad isn't to fond of that kind of project. Is there a cheap wireless network type thing I could set up?

I've done a little researching and heres what I found out. I need a wireless router and a wireless network adaptor. Now heres my next question. Is there a wireless router that can do this........Cable Modem -> Wireless Router -> Wireless Adaptor -> Upstairs PC and Cable modem -> Wireless routher -> Ethernet cable -> Ethernet card -> Downstairs Pc. So basically the router would be next to the downstairs PC and cable modem and be sending a signal to the network adaptor upstairs but I wouldn't have to buy another network adaptor card because I could just connect it to the downstairs pc through ethernet cable.

Most wireless routers come with a built-in 4 port switch. So, if the downstairs pc has an ethernet nic, you should be fine.

Actually, I should qualify that last answer -- it is always possible that wireless reception will be poor. Make sure you can return stuff if necessary.

ok thanks. So all I would need would be a wireless router and an adaptor card. Which ones would be good on a budget. I'm looking to spend 150 or less

Oops, sorry about the above blank post. The setup you described should work fine. With a wireless router that has a built-in wired switch you can plug your cable modem into that and connect the downstairs PC directly to it via an ethernet cable. Your upstairs PC should be able to pick up the wireless signal. I personally just bought the Netgear MR814 from Amazon ($70 - $20 rebate from Netgear), and I'd recommend that for your router. You can pick up a USB or PCI wireless card for your PC for less than $50, so you should be able to do this for around $100 after rebate. Good luck! 🙂
