Wireless signals sent in "pulses"?

Hi all. about 2 months ago, I bought a wireless router and Lan card so my neighbor and I could share a cable connection. However, I'm getting very irritated with the signal. It seems that my connection comes in pulses instead of being a steady stream of information. I'm using the wireless network card which is a Linksys usb card. This is irritating during gaming and larger downloads. My connection pulses in very regular intervals of roughly 20 seconds or so. Is this just how wireless works or is there something I can do to fix this? Any help is appreciated.
 
How far away is your neighbor? I had problems setting up a wireless router in my house and they were only 20 feet apart with a wall in between. To get it to work, I moved the router to the connecting wall, attached it to the wall up high, and changed the default channel the router was using.

If you are more apart than that and there is a wall in between, you will be very luck to get anything at all.
 
define pulse.

Does it freeze for 20 seconds ??? or does it slow down every 20 seconds ???

need the make / model of the router and your NIC.

Also it would be nice to know what OS you're running.


I would make sure the router firmware is up to date. Make sure you have updated drivers for the nic.
 
By pulse, I mean that I have a steady connection for about 20 seconds, then bang, for a second or so absolutely nothing. It just isn't slowed down, I'm actually cut off for a second or so. If I'm downloading, I often have to restart the download and if I'm gaming, I get massive lag every 20 seconds or so. It doesn't last long, but it's very annoying. Even when I'm surfing, I often have to use the refresh button because I'll hit the dead spot while clicking on a page.

As for equipment, I'm using a Linksys USB card and the router is a Linksys Wireless B Model no BEFW11S4. I'm running Windows XP.

I am roughly 20 feet away from the router now and before I was about 50 feet away. Moving my computer closer has made absolutely no difference. One thing I can say is that these pulses or dead spots are very regular. It's like the router transmits to me and then takes a second or two or more off every 20 seconds or so.
 
I have not been impressed with the Linksys wireless. I prefer others. You could purchase a more powerful antenna. I believe antennas can not only make the signal stronger but also dampen excess noise.

Is there a 2.4 GHZ phone or Microwave in your home?
 
I would try another channel on your access point. It sounds like you are shaving some sort of interference with your wireless signal.
 
I had this same exact problem with the same router. I also tried all the different channels, turning off my phones, moving closer to the router, nothing worked. I gave up and sent it back for a Netgear wireless G setup. I have not experienced any of these problems with the Netgear setup.
