Wireless signal strength very poor

Hello,

I've just bought a Dlink DGL 4300 router and Gigabyte 54Mbps GN-WPKG PCI wireless adapter. This is my first time using wireless.

I am getting a horribly poor signal. I've been reading up on what could be causing it, and I should be getting a good signal from what I've read.

Basically the router is behind a VERY thin sheet rock wall, and it then has 30ft to go (clear path after the wall) to get to the computer.

Windows is giving it one or two bars (it fluctuates back and forth), connection speed is very slow, and it occasionally drops the connection.

Would getting an external antenna possibly help the situation? Or is the Gigabyte PCI card just a bad wireless card?
