Wireless signal enhancer/magnifier?

I was just wondering if there's any sort of contraptions I can make/buy to make the signal with my wireless network stronger.

If I remember right, I heard someone on The Screensavers talking about it, and you have to make some sort of porabola out of Al foil...

What do you guys reccomend? I have one computer in the basement and one on the second floor. It's like being on Dial-up.
