Wireless setup: Components see each other, router won't connect to the Internet

D-Link DI-514 wireless router (11b). D-link wireless PC Card and USB thingy.

Can establish a link between all the devices. Can log into the router as admin.

Just can't get the router to connect to the internet. Everything looks like it is setup right, the thing just won't connect :|

The ISP is ADSL, and dynamic IP (not PPPoE, provider is Valor).

So I go through the setup thing, set the router for dynamic IP, clone the mac address, and restart everything.

Notebook sees the wireless connection, but no go on the Internet. I called tech support and no help. They said it was an ISP problem, ISP guys blame it on the router. I see no reason for it to be an ISP issue.

I've changed every setting I can think of and still no luck. Is there some magic setting I'm missing? There just isn't a whole lot to fiddle with on this router, it's pretty straight forward. I just want to get it on the net

try hooking the pc directly to the modem and see if that will work, if it does it's a router problem, otherwise it may be an ISP problem.

Some settings may require a reboot of the router.

Yeah the computers work fine connected directly to the modem.

Definately a router problem.

Have rebooted both the router and modem and still no luck. The router just won't access the Internet. Have tried doing a release/renew thing and that still doesn't do anything.

Arg.

Tech support is a no go on both ends, they blame each other. I don't see how it's the DSL people with any responsiblity. Just a setting on the router or something I'm missing.

Anyone? Please

Sounds like your Router is not picking up your ISP DNS. Try putting in the ISP DNS manually.

When setting up my wireless router, it didn't matter what I reset or rebooted unless I shut down everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, then turn them on in proper order. Shut down the DSL/Cable modem, router, PC and anything in between. Turn on the cable/DSL modem and wait until it's connected (Watch the lights), THEN turn on the router. Wait until the router's diag light or whatever goes off, THEN turn on the PC. Since then, I've never had to go through this. Dunno why I had to do this but it was in the manual so I guess it could be common

I just went through the same thing with my Microsoft wireless router install. It took a couple hours on the phone with their tech support but I'm sitting on my laptop typing this over my dsl line from across my house right now.

With my setup I was able to access the internet if I rebooted to safe mode with networking support. Since that worked we knew the router worked and it had to be something with Windows.

What finally fixed it for good was to create a new administrator user account. Something within the user account I had been using all along was what was blocking my internet connection. They did have me check and double check that all firewalls within Windows were disabled. We also disabled the wireless security setting as well (which just reminded me to try to enable that again before I quit for the night)

The whole thing took about 3 hours on the phone with Microsoft tech support and I was just about to lose my patience and take it back to Best Buy when we finally got it figured out. They must have had me reboot the computer and the router 20 times!

Nevermind, I took the pos back.

Spend 3 1/2 hours on phone with MS tech support
Works great
Go to Bed
Try to use this morning
Drops the internet connection during downloads or just randomly.
Go to MS website.
Update available due to dropping connections for PPPoE setups for my model router.
I get excited that an exact update for my exact problem is available
Connection gets dropped halfway through download.
Reconnect directly to DSL modem.
Finish downloading file
Reconnect router.
Install update.
No Internet Connection
Reboot
No Internet Connection
Reboot Router
Internet Connection works.
Surf Internet for 30 seconds
Drops connection
Start from scratch.
Internet connection works
Internet connection drops after 45 seconds of surfing.
Unplug everything, pack it up, drive back to Best Buy.

I'll try the LinkSys one tonight. My guess is that it will be up and running within 15 minutes since I've spent WAY too much time on this already.

Computers suck.

Heh, the Linksys is the one giving me problems

I haven't had a chance to try it again, maybe tomorrow night. I have done the shutdown routine MANY times. Still no go. The forcing the DNS idea is the best so far.

If that won't work and can't get anything else going, I'll just get the Netgear stuff.

This shizit's supposed to be plug and play basically. Hell it's not like I don't know what I'm doing. I can't imagine ma and pa going into Target and getting this thing working.
