I setup my own wireless network a couple weeks ago and saw my neighbor's unsecured broadcast on my computer. Obviously, it was easy to use his broadband connection - just click and connect

. I, of course, setup my network with all the encryption options available (WEP, MAC filtering, and disabled SSID broadcast). I also have a firewall software program that takes care of other security issues. My understanding is that other nearby Wi-Fi networks may see my broadcast but won't be able to ID it with the security measues I've undertaken. Still, some jackasses that are sophisticated enough could use certain programs like Airsnort to root around for passwords and such, but I'm hoping that no one around here has that kind of time on their hands. I think if you enable the Wi-Fi security measures, your chances of being hacked via the local network are slim.
The real security lies in being hacked via the Internet:Q. That's why I am looking into some VPN/Firewall routers and hoping that might help alleviate this paranoia I have of being hacked via the Internet. I don't have much personal info on my computer, but just being open to this potential issue is very worrisome to say the least.
I'm hoping that others may jump in with their comments regarding firewall hardware and this issue of Wi-Fi security because I hate to start another thread that is similar to this - I don't mean to hijack this thread also and with that said, I apologize to the original poster of this thread if is is misconstrued as such.
