wireless security with my cheap old router

i bought a cheap old router (dlink DI-713) that does not support MAC filtering. How do I lock down my wireless network? I can't even see how many wireless clients are connected. i even enabled a 40bit WEP key, but was still able to connect without doing any configuration on the client side... any way to lock this down? or should i just get a new better router?

even the better wifi security sucks, yours just sounds even worse. There is a netgear mr814 4pt 802.11b router in Hot Deals for $30 AR.
