wireless security question

setting up a wireless network for my friend...

WPA works, but her TiVo can only use WEP. For some reason I can't get WEP to work with her laptop. so now i'm stuck leaving it unsecured or no TiVo. if i enable MAC address filtering is it secure enough?

for some reason, her laptop can't connect using WEP. WPA is super easy.
with WEP, it sits there for several minutes trying to recognize the network before it even asks for the password. then it rejects the password.

laptop dell 700m
router WRT54GS

On the laptop, are you running XPSP2? Are you using the wireless card's wireless GUI, or are you using Windows' wireless GUI to make the association with the router? I suggest using Windows' GUI, and uninstalling or disabling the NIC's GUI utilities.

I recently purchased a Linksys WRT54G and am having problems connecting to our Tivo Series 2 DVR.

I believe I enabled WPA2, if I switch to WEP should that take care of my problems?

Most likely. I don't know what the Tivo supports. You just have to make sure the access point and client support and are configured for the same type of security/encryption.

WEP however can be cracked relatively easily.

Maybe find out what the tivo supports?

TiVos only support WEP.

Make sure that when you're entering the WEP key into the laptop that you're entering the correct one. I had a ton of trouble with WEP and it wasn't until I saw a successful implementation of it that I finally figured out. Here's what should happen.

1. Enter the phrase from which to generate the key.
2. Generate the key.
3. Select which key to use (typically select from 1, 2, 3, or 4).
4. Input the key as it appears in the box on the router into the laptop.

I'm away from my WRT54G so I can't tell you 100% how to do it but I think you can figure out the basic idea from this.

1. click the WEP radio button on the router page and generate the WEP in the router.

2. copy said key (whichever of the 4 your choose) into a text file.

3. use the newtowk without security to send said text file to the lappy.

4. enable WEP on the router and have her cut and past the key.

Thanks for translating that for me. 🙂

well it is very easy to mistype the key.

to add more confusion the key is really a long hexidecimal number. some APs and clients support a 13 digit ASCII key, some don't.

to alleviate any confusion it is best to copy/paste the key from notepad on both the AP and the client.

WEP is straightforward. Either you have a good key/key length or you don't. If you don't it doesn't work. You'll show connect to the AP, but the encryption isn't correct so there is no talkie-talkie. If you do it is fool proof.

I still have problems getting keys to agree and normally revert to putting in the hexidecimal equivalent on both sides via a copy paste from notepad onboth ends.

I just tried it again and it works 🙂

Guess what? Like I said it's NOT THE KEY, why can't you guys get that?

I was using WPA2 Personal then I learned (from this thread and Google searching) that I should be using WEP instead. I'll probably pick up a USB to Ethernet adapter at Fry's for $4.99 and turn off the wireless part when I move the cable modem upstairs.

Thank you everyone for your help, our Tivo is working again and for the 20th time it was NOT THE KEY 🙂
