Wireless routers & USB hubs

I've got a Microsoft MN-500 wireless router & a MN-510 wireless USB adapter that i'm giving to a friend.
I've lost the software & realize that I can download it @ Microsoft's site, but is it really necessary when running XP? I mean will XP recognize it w/o the manufacturer's software & install it properly?

You don't need any software for the router. You will probably need to download and install drivers for the USB adapter.

Ok...I downloaded the MSBN software & installed it on the system using the MN-510 adapter. It recognized my DSL modem/router as well as the MN-500 router (hooked into my cable modem). It showed an "excellent" connection, however I couldn't connect to the internet. I reset the MS router, to no avail. I unhooked the cables from the MS router & connected them back into my D-Link router & everything works.
Ideas?

How your DSL Authenticate ( ID, PW)?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but I have to type in a password to connect to my DSL modem/router. The router in question (MN-500) that's connected to my cable modem requires nothing, nor does the one I disconnected to hook up the MS router.

Well, i'm building a system for a friend & giving him the MN-500/510 setup.
He'll have two systems...the one i'm building that will use the USB adapter, & his 2nd, which will have the MS router hooked into his cable modem.
I just don't understand how come the pc's recognize the router & show an "excellent" connection but will not connect to the internet.

The Router software is just a utility that helps to enter to the Router for setup, it is a Placebo to people who are "Allergic" to computers, it does nothing else.

All I know is that it worked fine before upgrading to "G".
Perhaps i'll wait till I set it up @ his house w/his internet connection.
BTW, what's the command for clearing out any IP info? IPCONFIG/renew? I can't remember.

Hi I'm kind of in the same situation.

Didn't want to creat another post so I posted here.

I have 1 PC and 1 Laptop.

If I connected my PC or Laptop to my modem/router. I get internet fine.

Its a 4port router, it has wifi.

Now I want to be able to use my laptops wifi.

When I do a scan it picks up my router fine, I can log on, it also shows full signal strength but I can't use the internet.

It just says there is no conection.

Now if I plug my Laptop to my router directlly it works fine.

Any ideas?

Necro007,

That sounds like your laptop isn't connecting to the router with the correct wireless security settings (most often an incorrect WEP/WPA key) so the router is not giving it valid IP address information.

Thanks for the help Fardringle.

I tried changing the password (the WEP/WPA key), but nothing happened.

I reseted the router---nothing.

I went in to the "Wireless Network Connection Status", theres 2 tabs(general and suport) and clicked on suport.

Under this tab it says that:

Address Type: Manually Configured😕

Whats up with that???

I thought that if you use a router you should be getting a IP address from it and it wouldn't be manually configured..

Also the :
Default Gateway ---- its blank, theres no status of that.

Just so you know I was able to connect before to the router(using wifi).

Any ideas whats wrong?

I tried the "ipconfig /release" & "ipconfig /renew"...still no connection.
I just tried running a cat-5 cable from the router directly to the lan port on the pc...still no connection.
Bad router? If so, why does it show up under wireless connection as having an "excellent" connection?

That's the key. You have a static (manual) IP address set on the wireless connection so the computer isn't even asking the router for a valid IP address.

On the Windows desktop, right-click on the My Network Places and select Properties. If you don't have that icon on your Desktop, click on the Windows Start button, then Control Panel and in the Control Panel double-click on the Network Connections icon.

In the Network Connections window, right-click on your wireless connection and select Properties. On the General tab, click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the list of items, then click the Properties button.

In the Internet Protocol Properties window, click on the dots next to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". Click OK to close all of the windows and your computer should then attempt to obtain valid IP address and DNS information from the router.

Tullphan,

On the status page for your wireless connection, do the same as necro007 and click on the Support tab. Post what it says about your IP address.

Thanks again.

OK...I'm gonna give you the results of all 3 routers...all 3 having a cable run directly to my LAN port. First, w/the cable connection:

D-Link router:

Access Type: Assigned by DHCP

MN500 router:

Access Type: Assigned by DHCP

Zoom DSL Modem/router:

Access Type: Assigned by DHCP

I can get internet access w/the D-Link & the Zoom. When I switch the cables from the D-Link router to the MN500 router I can get no connection. When checking the TCP/IP, all 3 have the box checked to obtain an IP address automatically.

My post from 12/04/2007 06:37 PM explains exactly how to configure the additional Routers.

Spinning in circles it is Not going to work unless there is some minimal reading and understanding of the issues involved.

The addtitional Router have to be used as Access Points with dumb switches.

Their core IPs have to be manually change to be on the same subnet as the main Modem/Router their DHCP Off and the WAN port open.

I read your post, but all I was wanting to do is to make sure the router worked before I took it to my friends & installed it at his house. I'm not wanting to use it as an access point.
This router/usb adapter is going to another house w/a totally different internet connection/provider.
Perhaps i'll just wait until I get it set up there & see if I still have problems or not.
