Wireless Router's DHCP

Hi, I'm a field tech and I find this odd...could someone care to explain?

Sometimes I find that the client pc's & laptops can NOT attain an IP address from various wireless routers, with DHCP enabled. Even after resetting the routers and rebooting the pc's and running ipconfig /renew commands and etc.

So when I hard code the ip address and dns servers to the client pc's, it works!

Does that mean the DHCP portion of the wireless router is just not functioning? Or are there any other explanations?

How many wireless access points are in range of the machines you are having problems with?

I've seen some issues with machines continuously restarting the DHCP Request/Offer/Ack process if they have more than one wireless access point in range, they end up an an endless request cycle and never actually get one.

If they are in range of more than one, try taking a client and a WAP to a lab environment and see if it works on a 1:1 ratio.

I'll see if I can dig up an article on it (assuming there is one).
