I have 2 wirelss routers and would like to pump my network over to my garage.. (far end of the garage.. ) and the current router doesn't send the signal far enough for me to use a wireless card in my comp....

So.... Can a guy run a network cabel from 1 router to a 2nd router and have that 2nd router send out the net connection?

or can you do this with just letting the 2 wireless routers talk to each other over wireless...

If this is possible.. do the routers have to have some special option? or do routers have to be identical???

thanks!

You can do it...but why not just buy a wireless access point. Those are designed to be used this way. If you got a second router, you would have to go in and tell it not to act as a DHCP server and manually set its IP so it can talk to the rest of the network.

You believe you also need to change its channel so it doesn't interfere with your other wireless signal, but that would be the same no matter what hardware you buy.

I'm looking at wireless access point on the net... how exactly do they work??

Are they a router with a bigger signal to send out? or do they work in conjuction with the current router you have?

Basically you just plug it in, give it an IP, and set up your wireless settings such as channel, encryption, etc.

If you have two routers, and have a way to run cable in the house to a place near the garage, then the rest is fairly elementary.
Keep the router that is hooked up to the internet the same.
Then, follow the instructions I posted here.
Ignore the model specific references. he wanted to use the print server features on the second router, you want to use the wireless. It is all the same, but be sure to set up the wireless on a different channel as the other poster suggested.

Not to threadjack, but could someone give me a tip on the following:
I've currently got the DI-604(not wireless). Everything works fine.
I just ordered a laptop (wireless) and the DI-524 (wireless).
Currently I have cat cable running to my XboX in another room. Could I just take that cat5 from the XboX, hook it up to the DI-524, then run some cat5 from the DI-524 to the XboX, and have wireless for the laptop?

I don't mind keeping the DI-604 the way it is. Just want to know if I can hook the 524 into the 604 and have it not only hardwired to the main pc (604), but have it wireless (524)for the laptop?
I suppose I can swap them out, but would rather not since the main pc is in a location that would not be conducive for a good wireless signal.

thanks
