Wireless router with AP?

I want to connect a wireless router to my cable modem and use wireless upstairs. I also have an Compaq AP that I want to use downstairs. I want to be able to use my Ipaq up stairs and stay connected to the net while I walk downstairs towards the Compaq AP. Hod do I go about doing this, do I need a repeater or something? Thanks for reading.

Have you tried to see if one on the central floor, will work. My parents house is has concrete floors and only have one ap on the main floor, and it works through the whole house.... otherwise you should just be able to just set them both up and it will automatically pick up the new one when your old signal drops.
