I currently have a WRT54G as my router but I have just added another machine as well as a server, and I'm probably going to add a media server very soon. For streaming HD video (MPEG-2 TS) Gig-E is preferred. All my cables are Cat6 and all the machines are ready, I just need a new router.

I really love how well my WRT54G handles p2p and voip qos, etc. Any recommendations?

Exactly, use the router for your edge device and go out and pick up a giga switch for your computers. You don't loose what you love about your wrt54g, but you'll get gigabit speeds.

ok so cable modem -> wrt54g -> vonage router, GigE switch, wireless clients
GigE -> all wired PCs

All the routing etc will happen automatically? I'm certainly no networking newbie, but I'm no guru ;)

Also, any recommendation on a GigE switch (brand, model)?

How do you have the vontage router and the WRT54G hooked up right now?
If memory servers the vontage router has all the functionality of a normal router so do you have services like dhcp turned off?

The Routing will be fine.

Personally, while not my first choice I got 2 Dlink 8 port giga switches. I got a realllly good deal on them. I'm not sure in terms of brand.

i have the vonage router behind the WRT54g, and there is nothing plugged into it except the phone line.
the wrt54g with dd-wrt firmware does great voice qos etc.

After looking around, it looks like the SMC9505T or SMC8508T are the way to go because they suppose jumbo frames, I don't know if others do.

My server and main desktop have 2 GigE ports, is there any advantage to plugging them both in?

No, infact if u plug both in windows will get really mad.

It can work in linux though for example.

The next series of chipset from nvidia has support for channelizing both nic cards which would mean that you could plug both in to recieve a 2gb link...

Anyway hopefully that helps.
