Wireless router will not detect internet connection

I currently have the network setup with a D-Link 4 port router sharing our Verizon DSL. My brother was able to get a hold of Linksys WRT54G wireless router so I decided to put it to use. I must of spent over 3 hours last night trying to get it setup but it just wouldn't detect our DSL. I plug the old router back in and instant internet access. Switched it back to the wireless and tried renewing the ip address but nothing. I'm almost positive that our DSL isn't PPPoE because I can't remember ever having to login in to get a connection. Just to test that it isn't I reset the dlink router back to factory settings, ran the wizard to set up the connection and with no problem it picked up an ip address from verizon.

I have tried restarting and resetting multiple times and even reflashing the firmwire and still nothing. I do currently have it working by using the wireless router as a wireless access point with the dlink doing dhcp and nat. I don't want to keep it like this because there's a slight latency and it's another device using electricity when one should do the job of both.
