Like one can w/ a cable or DSL connection where a computer doesn't need to be left on to share it's connection. Does such a thing exist????

I have that exact wireless router. It's a RG-ummm... one sec while I go check, back in 2 minutes.
But it's got a 56k modem built in, when the connection dies, it will dial out to 56k.

Mine doesn't cause I never plugged in a phone line, but it's got the capability.

I think I've seen a router with that from D-Link. Not really sure. Tried looking for a hub with a 56k modem? It should accomplish the same thing if you connect it to the router I guess unless you need to route the ports.

You could just buy a cheapo old computer with a modem in it that you can leave on constantly and hook it up to a wireless network and do internet connection sharing. Doesn't really solve the problem though.

I have an old D-Link 711 Wireless router that I used to use. Has a serial port which can be connected to an external modem to dial out in case of broadband failure. I have since upgraded to the 614+, thanks to Hot Deals :).

Here's a link - more details in the product manual - http://support.dlink.com/Products/view.asp?productid=DI-711#

If anyone wants it, I'd be willing to get rid of it for a minimal cost.

Good question. I would love to find a way get wireless in my house with my dialup. Looks like from the responses i have seen i can do it. Just have a PC act as the gateway, and when its dialed up to my ISP the other nodes in my home network will have Internet access.

Is that correct??

Ok, I meant to come back to this thread last night, but I forgot about it. It's a Lucent RG-1000 wireless router. Works great for me, I love it. Hope that helps.

Many SOHO "routers" have a built-in serial port to connect to an external modem.

Offhand, I believe the SMC wireless Barricade router that was many people's favorite in 2001 is one of the relatively few wireless routers to also include a serial port. You should be able to find one without too much effort.

How would I set one up? I guess I couldn't use an ISP like Netzero Platinum huh?

SMC7004AWBR - 802.11b router and 4port switch. I think that is the model, it has been Discontinued, has a serial port built in (use external modem to connect) and can use for dialup primary or backup to a wan connection. You need a dialup ISP w/ a PPP connection, can't use an ISP that requires a program to connect--as you can't run the program ON the device.

Alternatively can use a Dlink 704 or SMC 7004 (also discontinued)... basically same thing without the wireless component. It has a serial connection but no wireless access point. You can add a standalone WAP to the lan side and go that route. I have that exact solution. I used it for a wireless to dialup router and it works fine with only one pc connected via the WAP.

Since both products have been discontinued you can search ebay and probably get one for cheap. There are still occasional firmware upgrades for these models as they have support in Taiwan from a few vendors who have repackaged the hardware in different cases. 1.96 is the latest version and has SNMP support, uPnP, etc.
